Happy Easter!

Inspired by several UK bloggers, I decided to try some Hot Cross Buns. Wow, that was fun!

Hot Cross Buns

I used this recipe, which I think is more traditional (but I could be wrong?) I wanted to try the English version of Hot Cross Buns, rather than the American version, but I have to admit the American in me kind of wanted some icing (LUV icing!) on those buns(it looks like icing in the picture, but it’s just a lighter colored dough.) I substituted milk for the water and milk powder, and I used golden syrup for the glaze. They were yummy and I’d like to make them again. This batch didn’t rise quite as high as I would have liked — the dough stuck to the cloth that I had covering the buns while they were rising and when I removed the cloth, they fell back a little. They were still great, but next time I’ll be more careful.

I just love all of your blogs and all the inspiration I get from them. I hope you’re all having a wonderful Easter!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Happy Easter!

Those look wonderful even though hot cross buns haunt my dreams at Easter – my mother ALWAYS bought them and we ALWAYS had to eat one before we could hunt for eggs so we had something in our stomachs prior to the sugar rush. Nothin’ wrong with that except that those buns contained the dreaded mixed peel which I did and do not care for one bit. After looking at the recipe and suddenly realizing that the peel is entirely optional, I’ll have to put these on my Easter baking list for next year. :-)

  2. You’re right. The ones they make “over there: have a cross made of lighter-coloured dough, not icing. My mother used to make them and I’ve tried, but mine never taste as good as hers! but seeing your makes me want to try again, even if it is after Easter now…..

  3. Those look wonderful – the crosses on yours are far neater than mine were! I love hot cross buns. I may have to make some more this weekend – if we leave the crosses off they’ll just be teacakes, which are fablous toasted and buttered. Yum.

  4. Dear Anna,
Why o why have I waited so long to visit you here? I have seen your name a time or two over at my place, but just didn’t get to clicking over to yours. Anyway, I love it here! It’s so pretty and I’m enjoying your posts too.

Sounds like a classic Easter for you! Much like ours. The table setting was charming and the napkins too.

I can’t wait to browse around Thimbleanna some more.

    Jody
