Dear Sheepie Sock,

I’m writing to express my condolences at the disappearance of your mate. I know it’s been a stressful six weeks while we tried to figure out where she’s been. I really, really wanted to blame the dryer — as you know, he’s a repeat offender. He’s innocent in this case though, because I would never throw you, or any of your handknit relatives, into his neighborhood.

Thimbleanna: Sheepie Sock

I know you’ve been lonely. It’s been such a mystery. And then, last weekend, Neapolitan sock lost his mate too and that started me thinking. Who could be abducting your mates? Do we have a sock thief among us???? Sadly, it hit me — I think I may be the culprit. It occurred to me that when I go to the gym at work and change my clothes in the stalls (as all of us ladies do), those stupid electronic eyes make the toilets flush constantly due to all the movement. In an effort to conserve water, I started draping a sock over the electronic eye while I was changing.

Thimbleanna: Sheepie Sock

Apparently, that’s not a good idea for a woman of my age and memory. I suspect I’ve left your mates hanging there — probably to be thrown away by some cleaning person with no appreciation for hand knits. You can’t imagine the shock and horror when I discovered that I am to blame. I hope you can find it in yourself to forgive me — I know it wasn’t the brightest of ideas.

Thimbleanna: Sheepie Sock

In the meantime, perhaps you would like to consider pairing up with Neapolitan Sock? He’s been awfully lonely too. You guys don’t really match, but hey — it’s the 21st century and these days, anything goes!

XOXO,
Anna

P.S.  Perhaps it would cheer you up a bit to see that the thimbles have a new blog header???

52 Thoughts on “Dear Sheepie Sock,

  1. lost socks the ban of our life…………

  2. I’m glad being a nut job isn’t limited to the Southern Hemisphere. I noticed your new header straight away. It’s AWESOME!

  3. I love your new header. How did you do that?
At Social Knitting, a person in our group was buying up all the sample socks (one only) for $2.50 each. We asked her what she was going to do with one of each pair. She said, “My sister has only one foot”? Several knitters laughed and said, “No really, what will you do with one sock”? It seems her sister is an amputee. Really. I’m not sure why I tell you this. It doesn’t do you any good. I see two lone socks on your needles….

Oh NO!!!!! I am so sorry about the socks!!!!! But I have to say I love the thimble header!!!!!! xoxoxo

  5. such a cute sock – sure hadn’t thought of people with only one foot needing just one sock – maybe you better save that one sock and see if the VA or someone can use it :)

  6. Oh no – such amazing socks too! I would truly just wear them as a lovely pair. I have a lovely collection of odd socks – most of them black but still odd.

    I love the halloweeny header!

  7. New header looks FAB but why don’t you ask at the gym…what a sad tale….beautiful socks.

  8. Really love the sheepie sock. So sad to have lost it’s mate. Do NOT throw single socks away as the missing one has a way of turning up just after you throw the other away and then you are left with still a single unmatched sock ( it’s part of Murphy’s law )

  9. My condolences. I wish I could say that I scarfed Sheepie Sock up from the gym bathroom, but since the truckers’ protest has me DC Beltway bound, it wasn’t me. You almost, almost, have me convinced to try knitting socks. After this loss, which I’m quite capable of copy catting, I am sticking with dish cloths. And the header is absolutely spooky. Love it! (How did you capture the expressions on their faces? Positively ghoulish!)

  10. Ha ha! Too funny! But sad (at the same time). Sorry for their losses.

By the way. Your header is the coolest thing ever. Seriously. You’re awesome.

I am so sorry for your loss—as a sock knitter, I feel your pain. (Seriously—I think losing a sheepy sock would bring me to tears.) And your new heading is absolutely scary—are you sure those guys didn’t take your socks? They look like the type that would. If Trekking still making the Brach’s Socks colorway, you could knit another pair and you would have a spare in case something happened to one of them.

  12. Oh Anna. I am so sad for you and your mate-less socks :(. Your banner is the cutest.

  13. Oh sad, sad, SAD!!!! that is just awful. You MADE those socks yourownself! I’m feeling your sadness of their loss. And I would definitely wear the two loners as a pair. Because you made them! Even if only around the house.
But, AWESOME new header… LOVE it!

  14. I’m pretty sure I sucked wind when I read what you did – all I could think of was ‘”OH NO” all that work for those pretty socks to only possibly maybe – could be – thrown away. I’m so sorry about that loss – but a great idea on the toilet eye if that’s any comfort. Those are 2 pretty socks and I think you could certainly wear them like that. You know anything goes out there lol. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that header – how the heck did you make that one happen you clever little Thimble
    Hugs – Mrs. Farmhouse

  15. I cannot even imagine how mad I would be at myself if I ever learned to knit socks and then left one where I’d be pretty sure I’d never get it back. I’m so sorry for your loss, as they say in the television cop shows…..

Very creative header, too. Quite ghoulish.

  16. Love the skeleton thimble crowd!
Such a shame about your socks :( So cute, too.

  17. Oh man, that is a bummer, and they are so cute. Love your new banner.

Soooooo sorry. I think I may have an extra skein of Neapolitan. I will look and let you know. I’ll send it to you if you want to knit another mate. I already have a pair of them and I would be so sad to be missing one! I’d love to share! I’m loving your little skeletons!

  19. Shame on you! You should carry a store bought sock for that purpose, not use (and lose) such a beautiful sheepie! I think the lonely ones should pair up —think of the conversations they’ll have, with each other, and those they’ll start for you with total strangers!

  20. hahaha, you make me laugh! But what a shame, those lovely socks, especially the sheepie sock. Have you tried the “lost and found”? Or don’t you have that at your office?

  21. I love your banner!! It made me chuckle. Then I read your post which made me laugh even me. Sorry about your sock, but at least you can find a little humor in telling your story. I hope that somehow, the gym still has your sock.

  22. Oh no! I definitely think you should wear the socks together. They have to fulfil their destiny! :oD

Love the new header – it caught my eye as soon as I got here! :o)

  23. Mismatched socks? Frannie wears mismatched socks all the time. It’s the thing to do. You are “with it”! Love the new creepy banner. I really do feed bad that you lost those two socks – I would be heartbroken.

  24. Wear the mismatched socks… they are both too beautiful not to wear them (I love that sheepy sock pattern!) And the new header is fabulous!

  25. Wow, that header is hard core! And all I can do is gulp, when I realize what must have happened to your socks :(

  26. Teeheehee — but I’m also soooo sorry that your socks have lost their mates, particularly the sheepie one. As for your header…..you’re sooo clever!!

  27. Personally, I think going to the gym at work was your mistake. That doesn’t sound fun at all. I think you’ll have to reknit the friends of your lone socks, though as one commenter suggests, you’ll then undoubtedly find the lost ones. Then you can knit another two… etc.

  28. I do so love both of these beauties. :) So glad they can at least have each other. ;) And wow, the creative, seasonal banner is great! :)

  29. Hi Anna….although somewhat dramatic, I’m positively sick about those lost socks. Never one to scold, I would like to say (very kindly and on behalf of your handknits) please take better care of your sockies!!!! It’s good to be back in these parts……I’ve missed you.

    okay i wanna puke.
did you really lose them both?
and did you ask the gym just in case???
    okay i’m just horrified.
call the gym, bring out the cavalry, offer a reward, i don’t know, PRAY.
i’m just bummed, bummed i tell you.
okay, nice header, you look darling in your socks and i’m sad beyond words about your socks.
    :sheds a tear

  31. Yet another reason not to work out! Seriously, did you call them and see if they were turned in? Love the header!!!!

  32. Love the new spooky header and the lonely sheep sock!
Missing socks, it’s always a mystery to me where they are hiding!

  33. Love the header !!! And my deapest condolences for your loss(es)

  34. Love your new header! I have always had a secret theory that there was a black hole behind the washing machine that kind of thrived on socks, because that was the only explanation I could ever find as to why I have lost so many one socks (not the pair, just one) in my life (an X file type of thing). Forgetting them at the Gym is really a much better explanation.

  35. Oh! I love your header – so fun and funny!
your poor poor sheep sock! and it was such a great sock – you must be so sad.
the mix match works for me!!

Love your new blog header! And I remember those sheepie socks….saaaaddddd you lost one, but go ahead and mix the loners. My daughters mix their socks on purpose from time to time. Apparently, it’s the thing to do ;)

That is the most hilarious post!!! How horrible though for the missing sox! I feel we need a moment of silence! Personally, I love the mis matched pair! I do feel your pain though…lol.

  38. really anna…wearing mismatched socks is all the rage at the moment. i think you should wear them proudly…and im jealous you have a gym at work.
    sorry about the MIA socks.
love your skelly banner with thimbles!

I was so happy to see your Halloweenie header (my soon to be 21 year old son was born on Halloween!). Then my happiness turned to sadness over the loss of your beautiful socks. Does the gym have a lost and found? You’ll just have to knit another!! So sad…….

  40. poor sheepies!! cover your eyes! wherever you are cover your poor sheepie eyes! ;p

love the header…second guy looks like he’s looking for your lost socks.

  41. So sad!! I admire your high commitment to clear reporting by setting up the explanatory photo shoot. lol
I used to knit socks but didn’t wear them regularly. Too much work for something to put on your feet. Do you wear them with backed shoes or clog-style? I still have a basket full of sock yarn. Might be a good way to work back into knitting…hmmm.
Any luck with a lost-and-found box?

  42. Oh what a disaster in sock land! I’ve never seen those strange electronic eyes over here so there must be some other explanation for our missing socks! That sheepie sock is so gorgeous – do you have any of the yarn left to knit it a new partner or does it have swan like tendencies and only have one partner for life?

Your blog header is absolutely amazing! How did you do that? xx

HA!! Cute story! Love your new header too.

  44. Those creepy skellies up top must have done it. I’d never blame you, Miss Thimble. I’m sorry for you loss(es).

  45. Scary header… I really had to think… Have I come to the right place…. ;0))) of course… I saw the thimbles…. Fun!!!! :0) Hope the lost one has returned from its secret place!!

  46. I can’t believe that you have lost a SHEEPIE sock – any other sock, but not a sheepie sock!!!!!!

  47. Great post ….. sad you have lost your socks but great post.

  48. Wow! I would have never thought of taking my sock off to drape the toilet sensor. I could not walk, in good conscience, barefoot in a public toilet ….. and gyms are public! Heck, I have a difficult time with shoes on! Poor sock, flushed to wonder aimlessly in Waste Land! Horrific! Well, I can help you. Send those two to me. My DD ONLY wears mismatched socks and she would love them! Problem solved! BTW, have you considered bringing a sheet of those self sticking dots? Send me your snail mail address and I’ll send you a few sheets. Cheaper then a hand knitted shock and you don’t have to worry about loosing their mate, they are celibate! Love your new header! So creative and talented that you are! Cheers or should that be flush?!

  49. My condolences! LOL, you’re too funny! Poor socks, it’s not an easy life!!
I LOVE your new header, I almost screamed when my browser opened your blog!! But I like Halloween because it’s my birthday as well. We are not used to celebrate Halloween in Iceland but in last 10 yers it is becoming more and more popular. I love it and I try to cut out a pumpkin an demand the birthday guests wear costumes, LOL, the kids love it but the grown ups are a bit shy (well some are) – let’s see what happens this year ;)

You are truly mental! I do love our skeletons, though! Wish I could be that creative!

  52. I bet the cleaner is holding on to the sock in the hope that it’s pair will get left behind one day.,.. You never know they may even hang it from the mantle and use it as a stocking at Christmas! :o)
