Thimbleanna

Candy Corn, Pranks, and a Quilt Frame

Otherwise titled, three random items:

One.

Fall is definitely here in ThimbleannaLand.  Although we didn’t really have much of a summer this year, it seems as though we’ve jumped from warm weather, right into the chilly stuff.  We’re in for several days of drizzly, rainy days.  That means the start of yummy oatmeal breakfasts.  And it’s October, so forget the raisins and bring on the candy corn!

Candy Corn Oatmeal

Two.

If you’ve been a reader very long, you know how much I love a good prank.  I love to laugh and make merry — I feel that Laughter truly IS the best medicine.  Are you all familiar with Improv Everywhere?  These are the people who were responsible for the prank in Grand Central Station where a bunch of people just froze in place.  And the prank that I recently referred to, where they took subway yearbook photos on a NYC Subway train.  They have a new prank that I watched, grinning from ear to ear, wishing it would happen in my local grocery store.  And a really fun video on their website is a Today Show Interview that occurred this summer.  I love this stuff (and there’s tons more on their website) — everyone needs a good pick me up now and then!

Three.

When I showed you my Jumbo Applecore Quilt, I meant to show you my quilt frame, but after three applecore posts, I decided to take a little quilty break.

Quilt Frame

I love my quilt frame.  It’s not the new sexy kind that tilts and has three rods, but it’s great for setting up a quilt for hand quilting.  Several years ago, MeMum, BigDaddy, TheManoftheHouse and I went to an auction.  I could only go to the preview, and I was so surprised to see this quilt frame among the household goods.  After close inspection, I had to leave for an appointment and I left TheManoftheHouse with instructions to bid on it.  “But don’t pay more than $40 or $50.”

Quilt Frame

Knowing what auction items will sell for is always tricky business.  I was just sure someone else would walk off with this frame and the bidding would be fierce.   It’s solid oak (it’s very heavy) and is beautifully handcrafted.  I could just imagine some woodworking husband lovingly making this for his quilting wife.

Quilt Frame

Look at the pretty details!  All the pieces are held together with pegs and it’s really sturdy.  Imagine my surprise when I arrived home at the end of the day to find TheManoftheHouse waiting with the quilt frame.  I was beside myself with excitement and afraid to ask how much it cost!  The auctioneer tried to start bidding in the hundreds of dollars and he slowly came down to $20, where TheManoftheHouse decided to jump in.  “Twentygimmetwentyfivegarbledstuffnoonecanunderstandtwentyfivewhatsmybidmoregarbled
stufftwentytwentyfivec’monwhat’swrongwithyoupeopleTwentygimmetwentyfive”. Silence. No. Other. Bidders.  So, TheManoftheHouse scored this beautiful quilt frame for the paltry sum of $20.  The oak alone is worth so much more than $20.  Auctions always make me a little sad for the families that must sell the goods, but I was so happy to give this quilt frame a good home!

The only down side to the quilt frame is this:

Quilt Frame

It doesn’t fall over on its own.  When I’m not quilting on it, I have to tip it on its side — the resident felines seem to think it’s a giant kitty hammock.  Bad Kitties!

If you’re still here, thanks for sticking with this week’s random.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Love the candy corn in the oatmeal. Soooo fallish.
My dad made me a quilting frame that sort of looks like that with all the knobs and stuff. It’s been in my attic forever until we moved. My mom uses her’s but I’ve never given it a try.
Good thing you addressed the reason it was flipped over because you know I was gonna ask.:-)

  2. I now have serious quiltframebargain envy! Will be up your way to “enjoy” some of your chilly [brrr] weather next month. How close are you to Columbus?

  3. Candy corn in oatmeal? Seriously? Now you’ve created a craving that will take up a corner of my brain and sneak out once I get rid of this yucky stomach bug!

Love the quilt frame! I’ll have to show it to hubby.

  4. Your random items are actually very fun to read and I’m always interested in hearing what you have to say. The candy corn in the oatmeal is a hoot and the pranks show is amazing. I’m stunned that your husband managed to get that awesome quilt frame for only $20 — that’s a fantastic deal.

  5. Oh wow! What a great quilt frame and what a great price, too! You just never know where or when you’ll end up with treasure do you? I’ve read two posts today of fortunate ladies who’ve been blessed with antique Singer sewing machines. Now if only I can stumble onto one!

  6. You certainly have an eye for great craftmanship. I would love to have a quilt frame like that. Now I may be the only one who hasn’t read your applecore posts so I’ve got some catching up to do. So glad to be back.

  7. Ewww… candy corn in oatmeal? Looks pretty, but I wouldn’t eat it – can’t stand the stuff. I do like your quilting frame, though. Very nice and quite a score for $20!

I’m off to check out the pranks. ?

  8. your frame is absolutely gorgeous, and just fyi, one PIECE of that oak would cost more than $20… and your oatmeal with candycorn is absolutely disgusting, :) but you would HATE that i have oatmeal with hemp hearts (i know, i know, you don’t even know what they are) and i sweeten it with stevia, toss in a few blueberries and top it off with coconut milk. does that sound california granola enough for you???

  9. What a pretty frame! Love the wooden gears and cauterpins. Just like a kitty to think it’s just for them to nap on- but then what isn’t for them to nap on? :-} pokey

  10. That quilt frame is gorgeous! Your hubby must have scored big points with you the day he brought that home from the auction. So funny that your kitties think it’s a bed for them.

  11. Mmmmmm. The only thing that would look better than the candy corn in oatmeal would be some little pumpkins too.

Your post with the bangers and mash looks yummy too, now that the weather is finally cooler.

  12. Candy corn in porridge? That’s just naughty.

Your quilt frame is gorgeous and I am hugely coveting it even though there is nowhere in this nhouse to fit even one small tiny thing more. Back to the decluttering …

  13. I’m going to look at some funny videos now that laughing doesn’t hurt. Love the frame, you must share your techniques for quilting on it.

  14. Thanks for sharing the grocery store musical! I love it!

The quilt table is also fantastic and all the better for being a bargain!

  15. OMG! LOL funny Anna. Made my yicky rainy morning (it’s only 4:30am) I also just love laughing and always enjoy a good joke/prank. Can you iamgine being around that guy all the time? Funny.
The quilting frame is beautiful and the price even better. As far as naughty kittens, I have two over here. Last night the one little stinker scared me to death, she jumped up on the mantle and knocked over some wooden spools; it was so loud when it hit the brick fireplace I almost wet myself. :)

  16. Sweet and healthy with a dose of laughter sounds perfect. Your quilt frame is so beautiful, I love the craftsmanship, auctions can be fun you never know what you will come home with! Have a great weekend Anna.

  17. The drizzly type weather is over here too – just right porridge for breakfast, I love candy corn but not so sure about it on the porridge, we can’t get it over here so I shan’t have chance to try it anyway!
Your quilting frame was a wonderful bargain – well done your DH for getting it for you.

  18. Anna! You’re a genius! Candy corn in your oatmeal? Why did I not think of that? Yum. I love candy corn- my jar of candy corn-peanut mix is empty to prove it. lol
I cannot believe that your quilt frame was only $20. It was definitely destined to come live with you. :)
I’m off to look at Improv Everywhere. Why have I not heard of this? Really, I am the raisin at the end of the grapevine.

  19. yes it is yummy — thank you again, I think later today we might be attempting to make cupcakes :-), not sure about putting them in oatmeal though ! Hub certainly got a bargain didn’t he

  20. Thanks so much for posting about Improv Everywhere. Loved their Grand Central video but didn’t know they did this on a regular basis. Also, your quilt frame is gorgeous! What a bargain!!

  21. Twentygimmetwentyfivegarbledstuffnoonecanunderstandtwentyfivewhatsmybidmoregarbled

LMAO! Ain’t that the truth! I don’t know how ANYBODY can understand them. GREAT score! Reminds me of the auction we attended over the summer, for a very high end furniture store that closed its doors. We were looking for stuff for my in-law New Hampshire house. We got a solid maple bunk bed for $20.00! Nobody else bid on it! They use it in NH as two twin beds and push them together for one really big bed. They had other furniture at the auction for CHEAP. I wish I needed furniture. King size headboard, footboard and rails for $200.00. Bargains to be had!

  22. I would have easily gone to $100 for that lovely! Stunning! Question? Will your kitties jump when they can’t see where they are going? Mine won’t so they stand on their toes and look up trying to see if they have safe landing. I could probably get away with stashing pillows, or empty boxes around the edge…but otherwise…GIANT hammock for kitties it is! Of course on the side works great too.

  23. Hi there! That candy corn in the oatmeal looks like something I would’ve liked to try a long time ago, LOL! Enjoy!
That quilting frame looks awesome! I am glad you won it!

  24. Your Quiltframe looks phantastic.
    And it is so useful.
I´m sure you will enjoy quilting now even more than before.
    Have a great week
    Janine

  25. Thanks for sharing about your quilt frame. I have one from my grandmother that is in the attic. I can’t wait for the day when I have room too set it up and use it.

  26. Thank you for all of the great photos of your quilt frame. It is hard to imagine that most homes once had one. I have never actually seen one in person, but hope to have my own someday.

  27. Wow, you are lucky to have that quilt frame. That would make my life so much easier! Its awesome.
ahhh, is the candy corn in your oatmeal a prank?? I mean I love a good candy corn and I put it popcorn and pnuts but oatmeal :)) I am going to look at all the pranks now!

  28. That is such a beautiful quilt frame. I actually made my hubby come over to the computer to see. *hint hint* I have the “fancy” modern frame and hoop and I don’t like it at all. You are so lucky! :)

  29. Mmmmm… candy corns on oatmeal, now that is the breakfast of champions!! Went and watched the singing grocery store prank, loved it. Why it doesn’t happen in our own stores will remain a mystery. I have some of those kitties here too.

  30. Hi sister friend!! Wow, the quilt frame is amazing. And for $20. I love it! And I love all of your posts that I’ve been missing lately. I am so behind in everything it seems these days. LOVE the apple core quilts, LOVE the little cupcake stands, LOVE the Scotland pictures-I could look at them all day, LOVE the men in quilts, LOVE your naked mom baby stripper photos! Oh heck, you know I love it all. Can’t wait for us wifeys to have a nice quilting session with the new frame while ‘hubby’ sits looking pretty wrapped up in the apple core quilt. x

  31. Anna, that is such a great idea with the candy corn! L-man was gone last weekend and I bought and ate a whole bag by myself while I was quilting my scraps to treasure quilt. The names on the quilt are turning out sooooooo coool by the way! I can’t believe you kind of laughed at me! I’ll show you! :) And your quilting frame is truly a piece of artwork. Very hard to believe it sold for $20. What a steal!

  32. o.k. first of all…do you really put candy corn in your oatmeal? lolol. Secondly I am heading over to the improv sight as soon as I leave this comment. I love prank shows. I was a Candid Camera addict growing up. Thirdly I am very, very jealous of your quilting frame–which is weird because I don’t hand quilt. I just think it’s beautiful and I would leave it set up with a quilt on it just to look at and make people think I hand quilted :)

  33. I just love the quilt frame. How lucky to get it for just $20. I love how you have to turn it on it’s side but I sure hope the quilt doesn’t become a scratching post for the cats, lol. I’m going to run over and have a look at those websites. I need a good belly laugh! Thanks for sharing the information. I look forward to seeing the videos.

  34. Gorgeous frame Anna- It is always nice to see what you are up to- I am not sure about candy corn in the oatmeal– suppose it is not too different than adding brown sugar.

Mars the cat would love your frame- she loves to sleep on any of my new projects.

    Enjoy your Halloween visitors.

    Regards,
    Anna

  35. The quilt frame is beautiful. I just love to see a quilt on a frame in the process of being quilted.

  36. I realized later that I hadn’t read all the way down to the quilt frame, and I had to come back. That is a beautiful frame! I have a quilt frame someone gave me as a hand-me-down, and I have never set it up. I need to do that. Thanks for the inspiration!
    Karen

  37. I do love a good bowl of oatmeal for breakfast myself! It is a lovely quilt stand. I love them, all the lovely wood details. Kind of like a great wood spinning wheel.

  38. the quilt frame is sheer beauty! I remember going to my grandmothers when she had here suspended on pullys from the ceiling.

  39. Such a wonderful frame with your quilt. Those kitties – our whole house has been turned upside down because of a 4 lb yorkie – nothing sitting on the floor because she’ll destroy, socks, YARN, plastic, she’s even taken to chewing on the fireplace bricks and wood! Jeesssh. I had cats for so long and dogs in my youth. Please Lord, let her get out of this puppy stage with my sanity in tact. Long story, short…I Totally understand the turned-over quilt frame! See you tomorrow….Shreee. Maybe they have OK’d the bridges and overpasses by now and if he wasn’t by THE particular one then – who know’s maybe the coast is clear now. Always, twitching Robin

  40. Great score on the quilt frame. I base mine and use a hoop to lap quilt. I haven’t done one in a while though. I’m just finishing a halloween quilt top. I may get it done by next year.

I still owe you a picture of my applecore quilt. I’m sitting under it right now. I’m just not very good at posting.

  41. So nice of Man of the house to do that for you! My grandmother had one and I never knew what happened to it. If you ever come along another one…love the candy corn too, and I will never get sick of the applecore quilt:)

  42. Candy corn on oatmeal? Ewww..you can have my portion! ;)

I love your quilt frame and the price is unbelievable! Lucky you. I no longer have room to set mine up since moving into this house, but when I could use it…a nice long sheet of aluminum foil laid across the quilt at night kept my kitties off it.

You have a fun blog..now I’m going to snoop around some more. :)

  43. Oh I love oatmeal in the fall. I have been having it a few days a week and of course I love it sweet. What can be better than sweet candy corn added! Cute. And your frame is beautiful. It is like a well made piece of furniture. I love it. Love the quilt too.

  44. oh wow – lucky you to have found such a treasure! My dad made me one but nothing nearly as fancy as this!!! He didn’t even sand the parts at the bottom :( and it’s very rough.

Love the georgous trees outside your window too – I didn’t appreciate the beautiful colors of fall until we moved to SE Texas where the trees do not change like they do everywhere else we’ve ever lived… :(

So glad to have found your blog this week – I’m adding you to my Google Reader ;)

    Love from Texas! ~bonnie
