Dresden Table Topper

Blogged about HERE.

Pattern:

  • No pattern.  I measured the top of the table and cut a background fabric smaller enough that I could add a piano key border.
  • I found a dresden tutorial online (which unfortunately I can’t find anymore) for the big, pieced dresden.

Materials:

  • Various blue, red, yellow and black scrap fabrics
  • Quilt Backing
  • Quilt Batting

Additional Info:

  • This was a quick and easy project.  After the top was pieced, it was stipple quilted on a domestic machine.

Gift?

  • Nope, just for me.

Dresden Table Topper

And thus endeth one of the most boring weeks in recent memory. It was so boring I couldn’t even muster up anything to blog about. Isn’t it funny how some days drag painfully on, yet the months and years blitz by? I did manage to finish my table topper for the family room.  (Sorry, it looks wonky – I was standing off to the side when I took the picture.)

Table Topper

I don’t really think it’s any less busy than the orange peel pieces were. {Sigh}. I probably should have put it on a solid background, rather than the jumbo numbers. But I love that print so much, plus, I wanted it to have the same feel as the little side table topper that I made a few months ago.

Table Topper

The fabrics are a mix of Cosmo Cricket’s Circa 1934, Sweetwater’s Reunion and scraps from my stash.  They pull out the colors from the stripey rug, which looks a little more muted than it is in real life.

Table Topper

It’s not really a table topper.  It’s a kitty liner.  PaulKitty thinks I moved it out of the sewing room and on to this table just for him.  He’s color coordinated with the background print.

Table Topper

Thanks to everyone for all the Downton Abbey replacement suggestions.  If, like me, you’re looking for something to fill the waiting-for-season-3 void, here’s a list of some suitable replacement series: (If I left yours out, please let me know!)

Upstairs Downstairs
Great Expectations
Sherlock Holmes
The Forsythe Saga
Cranford
Bleak House
Daniel Deronda
Middlemarch
Call the Midwives (which I can’t find yet on Netflix, but I’m hopeful)
South Riding
As Time Goes By
Ballykissangel
The Firm
Mad Men

Whew! That should keep us busy for a while, don’t you think?
Have a good weekend!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. You’ve been too bored to post and I’ve been too busy. Hmmm…not sure which situation I’d rather be in. I will write a post today or tomorrow, though, because I have a finish to show AND because we’ve had an extraordinarily large dump of snow that needs to be photographed…’cause you know how much I love snow (snort).

Your topper is sweet. And I think it’s all the sweeter with PaulKitty on top!

  2. Love your topper! Have you seen North and South? Oh my, is it good. It’s not the Civil War movie, but is about the north and south of England during the Industrial Revolution.

  3. I love it! Think it looks great!
Not much to blog about here either except for husband and child down with the flu, me on sick leave with a neck prolapse (on the mend)…which means not much done on the crafting front…
Instead I’m looking forward to a trip to London in a short two weeks time! :-)

  4. I love your topper, and I think the number fabric makes it!
love your fluffy kitty, what a sweetie pie.
thanks for the TV viewing list – good resource.
    I’d add:
    Doc Martin
North and South (which is not about the civil war, which I always thought it was)
    love mad men, can’t wait!!

  5. I love the little table topper; it’s perfect. But how much work just for a small piece!!
I don’t watch much TV these days, but something I never miss is “Midsomer Murder”.

  6. Love This!!!!! What is the pattern Anna? I think it is perfect just the way it is. I am hoping to finish some projects now I am not watching much TV.

  7. we watched Cranford and enjoyed it. I like your table topper and love the number fabric.
Mad Men is quite fun – interesting to see how far we have come since the 60’s.
Hope you have a grand week full of lots of fun things.
    Regards,
    Anna

  8. awesomeness…..no good tv suggestions, i live on a steady diet of foodtv, hgtv, history channel and discovery…and no good comes of it!

  9. love all things 30’s! & your topper is no exception…except… that is it EXCEPTIONAL!!
    talent abounds!

  10. You must get Cranford if you haven’t seen it yet .And I think you would adore Lark Rise To Candleford. Both BBC I think.

  11. I love your kitty liner! LOL And the black and white number background looks great, especially with PaulKitty modeling on it. :)

  12. A show I really enjoyed was Doc Martin, i don’t think it is on Netflix (however I live in Canada- the US netflix is different). I also liked the series Lie to Me which is on the Canadian Netflix.
Wasn’t the Christmas special amazing- thanks to you I watched Downton, such a great watch.

  13. My preferred sewing companions are mysteries series from the BBC with an occasional dash of Bones and old TV, currently season 2 of Hart to Hart. The clothes, hair and music in that one has you shaking your head…what were we thinking!

  14. Love the kitty liner! I have the tea today and then I plan to sit & knit and, weather permitting, squeeze in a walk. I had an empty feeling when I realized there would be no Downton Abby today and for some time. Thanks for the substitution suggestions.

  15. Oh this quilt is absolutly wonderful.
I love the numbers and the circles.
Absolutly amazing what you can do with a little fabric.
    Have a great sunday
    Janine

  16. LOVE IT!!!
    i can’t believe i didn’t buy that fabric! what was i thinking???
while you were posting… i was off in sunny Napa, sneaking into vineyards and snapping a few photos.
maybe i’ll get over my blogaphobia and start posting!
so yesterday… i was in the car, sweetly napping while hubby was driving home. i did NOT have my head tipped back with my mouth AGAPE!
then, i ask him to drop me off at the store so that i can grab a couple things for my chicken posole, and he sends me a photo on my iphone.
    a photo of ME.
    alseep.
    with my head tilted back.
    and my mouth all AGAPE.
    i’m suddenly horrified.
    where did he get this.
    oh no!
who else has he sent it to.
    i run from the store.
    i grab his phone.
i instantly delete the photo, delete it from his sent messages, punch him in the arm, shout at him and tell him ‘IT’S NOT LIKE YOU TOOK THAT CUZ YOU THOUGHT I LOOKED SO CUTE! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!” then i ran back into the store… and leisurely finished my shopping.
it was a terrible finish to my wonderful day in Napa.
I was supposed to go on my birthday, but I was having a fun time working that day and just couldn’t stop, that job gets so addicting sometimes!
anyway…. now that you know… my husband is a prankster and that i’m not the cutest while i’m napping in the car… i’m ending this novel of a comment.
    :waves madly

  17. Hi Anna,
Your website is the only one I go to consistently to, but I discovered yesterday Red Brolly from AU. Seems like one that you would really like.

  18. Hello Anna

I think you should definitely watch the Call the Midwife series, I have loved it just watched the last episode last night on catch up.

I bought all of her books to read in Spain and went through them all in 3 days. Lovely table topper, I like the backing fabric very much.

    Alison

  19. [Sigh] Downton Abbey…so sad it is over for another year. Wondering what to do with myself tonight. So grateful for your list. Thanks, Anna. :)
Table topper looks lovely. Paulkitty is very handsome.
    Later,
    Cassie

  20. I love the old-fashioned look of the table topper/kitty liner. Those numbers are very cool! Thanks for list of Downton Abbey replacements; I am starting to have withdrawls and can only re-watch the episodes so many times! Good thing Mad Men is starting next month.

  21. This Paulkitty Quilt is perfect! The design, the colors and the background sends me over the moon. Yep, pinning it. I haven’t seen the number printed fabric before. Love it.

  22. I agree, the days drag but the months fly. Why is that? I am looking forward to the next month, though. Spring is almost here! I think your new piece matches your side table topper very well. I have not finished Downton Abbey’s current season yet. If you like a bit of mystery, I would recommend Midsomer Murders. Not a period piece, but I love CDI Barnaby; he’s very calming in the midst of all the murders!

  23. I love how the kitty thinks its his own bed.. I’d like to be owned by a kitty someday. ;-) lovely table topper. I like the numbers print a lot.

  24. WOW! Love your new table topper – it looks fab! If you run short, there’s an Australian comedy/drama called Seachange which I enjoyed. Hope life becomes less boring!

  25. Your table topper is fabulous Anna!

I have to confess that I have missed all the Downton Abbey series – we watched the first episode but didn’t get into it – now I’m wondering what we have missed as all my friends love it!

    Lucy xx

  26. Tee Hee..you must have missed the memo: February is *supposed* to be boring.
I love the quilt topper…and the cat…and the way they coordinate.
    Jolly good show! (Get it?)

  27. Love the table topper. I love that number fabric. I wish I had some.

I watched Downton Abby with my parents and sisters in Hawaii last week. We watched the first season last year there.

I was able to find North and South, Wives and Daughters, and Cranford in a set at Costco last week. I love North and south (not about the civil war). Have you watched either of those?
