A Summer Top

Gosh, I know I say it all the time, but I can’t believe how quickly the days pass. How is your summer treating you so far? It’s hot and dry here — we could use some rain! The good part about no rain is that the grass doesn’t grow as fast which means less mowing for me.

Less mowing = More sewing! ;-D

I finally finished a top for me that I started last summer. That’s a bad habit — I start something and then it gets put aside if the week gets too busy. But — when I pick it up again it feels like a quick project!

Thimbleanna's Summer Top

I used an Anna Maria voile from a year or two ago. The print on the fabric is so busy that it’s hard to see the shirt style. It’s New Look 6781.

The pattern suggested rows of trim on the bodice but I thought that would be too much for this busy fabric. So, I played around with my machine and stitched along the zigzag lines of the print. You can’t really see the extra stitching unless you’re about to kiss me, but I like it anyway. “I” know it’s there and that’s what counts, right?

I love the fit and the softness of the fabric. It’s a really comfortable shirt and I know I’ll get lots of use out of it for a few years.

I’m home today while some painters do their thing in our family room. It’s such a luxury to be home and have some cleaning time in the middle of the week and I’m having a great time! Must get back at it!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Having someone else paint is so worth it! ;p I love the new top. The voile with me nice and cool for summer.

I’ve got a little bit of sewing in. Not enough, but some…stay cool. ;p

  2. It’s cool here! Nicesunny evening, but windy and the forecast for tomorrow and indeed much of the weekend is rain, wind, rain…..oh well – Scottish summers for you!

I will go to knitting group this Saturday and out with the National Trust destroying me some himalayan balsam at House of the Binns on Sunday.

  3. Ha! I’ve got an unfinished top that I started about three summers ago. Do you think perhaps I should finish it?

  4. Very cute shirt! I get so discouraged when I go shopping and can’t find anything I like. Ikeep saying I’ll Just have to make some tyops myself, but it doesn’t seem to be happening!

  5. I love this top!!! That stitching pattern is genius. I bet it would stand out just like shadowing. It’s so cheerful.

  6. I love the top- did you do it in the voile? Looks like it- great pattern. Wish I needed a summer top right now (as I sit in front of my fire :))

  7. That is too cute! I’m glad I’m not the only one who does that…start something and finish it later…much later :)

  8. It’s a cute top! I really want to get to sewing a top or two for me and some summertime dresses for the grandgirls. I *wish* we could see the top ON you because you are so cute!

Hot and dry here too. We really need some rain. My mowing job is diminishing like yours.

  9. Please stop showing off about your hot, dry weather. Those of us here in the UK who have had little else but storms, gales, rain and unending greyness are green with envy at your hot and dry!

Pretty top … but cleaning? Really? Are you ill?

  10. What a nice top! great fabric and your technique looks perfect.
I have a jacket that I started like 3 years ago, worked on 1 week this spring and now it is back on the to do pile – what the?
Fresh paint – what a treat!

  11. Hi Anna,
Sweet top! How is that fabric for wrinkling? Will it need a press after laundering? Or will it go to the cleaner’s? Man that’s a lot of questions! Beautiful sewing work….have a great weekend!

  12. Love it…I really need to sew some things to wear…I’ve had the hardest time finding clothes lately…just don’t like anything at the stores!

  13. Love it, Anna. I’ve had a Tova top on my sewing girl since February or March. Maybe I should finish it. Yes. I think you have inspired me.

  14. Cute, cute top and your sewing is so perfect (and straight ;-) Well we can trade house for a while. It is rain, rain, rain here. Not a lot of sun. Still waiting for summer to come and to be able to run in the grass barefoot!! Clarice

  15. I’m sitting typing this looking out at our very soggy garden – we have had a tremendous amount of rain …… if only I could send you some!
I love the top – I haven’t done any dressmaking for years – maybe I should have a go (as if I had time!!)

  16. It is beautiful. I love how these shirts have come back. I have a pattern and liberty fabric to make one somewhat similar to it. I sort of am afraid to cut it out because the fabric was an arm and a leg. But I want to wear it. Maybe soon.

  17. Cute top! Last year! Unfortunately it’s no longer in style! Just teasing you! Goodness, I cannot sew myself so I certainly appreciate someone who can. Of course because it’s you, I had to tease you! Enjoy your cleaning day! Cheers!

  18. For those triangles – you could do like I have done. First you find an empty container – like a pretty box or plastic storage gin or really cute bag, and then you put the triangles in the container for a future project. Over the years, you add more triangles to the container of all different sizes and fabrics. Ten years later to get the container out and you ask youself – “Self, why did I keep these?” and then you put them back away for another 10 years.
