A Chili Cook-off

Well, how’s the week going so far? Are you all busy? I hope those of you going to the fall quilt market have a super time. When you’re in the middle of all that frenzy, try to think of the rest of us back here in blogland, just sitting around, twiddling our thumbs waiting for your reports!

We had a good weekend here in ThimbleannaLand. I cleaned and scrubbed and cleaned some more, for two days in the kitchen.  Even the dome had a bath in a towel covered sink to protect it from breaking.  Now everything is all sparkly clean, including uglygreentile.

CleanKitchen

On Saturday night, I took a break from the cleaning.  I’ve been wanting to find a good white chili recipe, so MeMum, MyDadLovesMeBestSister, and I decided we’d each try a new recipe and test them all together.  MyDadLovesMeBestSister lives in a 90+ year old house and they’ve recently added an addition that includes a beautiful new kitchen, so, what better way to break it in than with a chili cook-off?

Kitchen

My favorite part of the kitchen is the beautiful new stove.  The middle section of the stove contains a grill and a griddle.  Be still my heart.  It’s so brand spankin’ new, they haven’t even had time to install the tile on the back wall yet.  That didn’t stop us though, we got right down to mixing and cooking.

Kitchen

Of course, there was a funny wine bottle involved.  Don’t worry though, no chili was harmed during the event.

Kitchen

Skinnyb*tch MyDadLovesMeBestSister even wore her birthday apron — notice how it matches the wine bottle?

Kitchen

We cooked and stirred and laughed and had a good time.  After the cooking, we passed out a ballot to everyone and we put the chili in little numbered sample cups for everyone’s tasting.

Kitchen

Did I get any pictures?  No, we were too busy.  That would have been a good picture though — just imagine all those little sample cups all lined up and ready to taste.  We even dragged the drywall guy (who was working in another area of the new addition) into the kitchen and made him taste and vote.  This chili (recipe brought by MeMum) was the prettiest.

Kitchen

But, this chili (recipe brought by me) won, hands down.  Everyone loved it.  That’s because it’s the only one that has cream and cheese in it and it will probably cause your heart to sieze up.  It’s soooo worth it though.  I found this recipe courtesy of Ms. Farmhouse.  She always has wonderful recipes – her oatmeal cranberry cookies are one of my all time favorite cookies!

Kitchen

Anyway, we did change this recipe just a teeny, tiny bit. The other two recipes had shredded chicken and we decided that we liked that better than chicken cut into chunks. We also like the addition of cilantro.

Creamy White Chili

2 – 3 baked chicken breasts, shredded
1 Tbsp oil
1 onion chopped
14 oz. can chicken broth
2 – 15 1/2 oz. cans Great Northern Beans, drained and rinsed
2 – 4 oz. cans chopped green chiles
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
8 oz. container sour cream
1/2 pint whipping cream
8 oz. bag shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
1 package Fritos corn chips
Chopped, fresh cilantro

Heat oil in large pot or dutch oven. Saute onions until tender. Add broth, beans, chiles and seasonings and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add shredded chicken, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Add sour cream, whipping cream and cheese and mix well. Pour into soup bowls and top with partially crushed Fritos and cilantro and enjoy!

Thank you SO much Ms. Farmhouse for posting this delicious recipe — it’s sure to be a new family favorite here in ThimbleannaLand!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. oh I love it! sounds like a great way to spend the evening and love how you crossed out skinnybitch! had a good chuckle over that one out loud!

man I am loving that kitchen, huge kitchen envy going on here!!!

    Corrie:)

  2. Oh, my goodness, I have to try this!!! I’m used to good old fashioned mid-west chili with kidney beans and tomatoes. This sounds sooooo good. And cilantro!!! Be still my heart!!!

  3. Oh great timing. I am going to have a Halloween party and was looking for a great white chili recipe. I’ve dropped off the planet again. I can’t keep up with life and blogging. I spent last week in Texas with Candice. We worked hard on her new house and had a blast together.

She is supposed to send me pictures that I can post. I’m not holding my breath though. I love how it turned out. We also went to Round Top. What an amazing experience. So fun!

  4. Oooh, yum. Good to see the apron in action too. And I think I’m drooling over both of your kitchens – sorry about that, I know you’ve just deep cleaned them :-)

  5. What a great event! Sounds like you all had a wonderful time. I bet that chili with the cream and cheese was the best. Of course – it had cream and cheese in it. I don’t think I’d better try that recipe. A minute on the hips and all that…

Can you come over and give my 100 year old house a good scrub? I just don’t have time. My husband has taken over cleaning duty for the past 2 weeks, and his standards are quite a bit lower than mine.

  6. Wow, what a great stove. I have a pretty big stove, but still I have to juggle to get all my pans on there. But this one, I think with that there won’t be that problem.

The chili looks yummy by the way. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  7. I love the chilli cook off idea – it sounds like so much fun and a good way to christen a new kitchen! I also had to laugh at the references to your sister!

never seen white chilli before – what are great northern beans???

  8. Yum, I had chilli for tea, red bean and minced meat though. You made me homesick, my sisters and I used to have big family theme things going on like that, thanks for stirring great memories.

  9. Yummo! You’ve done it again, another great post. And great pics too. I got nothin’. It has been a crazy week since I’ve blogged. Maybe I’ll come up with something this weekend. We’re headed to Iowa for Homecoming and a college visit at the U of I.

  10. Oh, my gosh, Anna! Both chilis look delicious but you won me over with your cream-infused bowlful. Yum, yum. Hmm, I wonder if my family would eat white chili. Their favorite is the chili made with that little brown bag and a can of tomato sauce. Gag. I eat cereal on those nights. It is a cruel trick for a mom who loves to cook to be given a family with dead tastebuds. ;)

  11. The Winning White Chili recipe sounds wonderful, quite different from the Weight Watcher recipe that I use! And your sister’s kitchen looks beautiful too. Maybe she’ll let you take us on a tour when the project is complete:)

  12. The chili cook off sounds like a blast! I am sitting here thinking of people I know who might want to do one as well :) Thanks for the recipe.

  13. The chili cook off sounds like a blast! I am sitting here thinking of people I know who might want to do one as well :) Thanks for the recipe.

  14. Now I want a sister just so I can have a chili cook off and win! *pout* LOL Your recipe is right up my husband’s alley. I’m counting on him loving me just a bit more when he tries it. If his heart seizes I’ll just collect on his life insurance ;)

  15. Oh all the cooking I could do in your kitchen. Today is our Saturday, so we are off for a fall picnic. Thanks for the yummy recipe. Clarice

  16. What a fun day spent with family! I love love LOVE that stove! And the pot filler! Be still my heart! I want to see MORE pictures of your sister’s kitchen!

  17. Anything with chips on top has to be good, doesn’t it? You crack me up, Anna. Love your wine bottle and skinny b’s apron. Looks like loads of fun.

  18. I have never heard of such a thing. Chilli and cheese and cream all together in one recipe? It looks quite scarily delicious and lardy. Just in case there wasn’t enough naughtiness you sprinkle crisps on top. Special!

  19. I will definitely try this recipe while waiting for market posts this weekend! I saw it on the blog of Ms. Farmhouse and bookmarked it…but now I’ve just printed it off! What a lovely kitchen for a chili cookoff, too!

  20. Love the Skinny B—–‘s new kitchen and the chili looks really yummy, think I will have to try this……………..smooch I want a tour of the sista’s house. :)

  21. Mmmmm, that looks so good. Definitely going to try some of that next time I have some leftover chicken. (Mrs FArmhouse does have some great recipes, doesn’t she!) What a great stove to have, that thing is to die for!

  22. Ms. Farmhouse’ chili looks yummy. I’ll have to try that. congrats on the win. Love the skinny B’s apron and that wine bottle. Maybe she’s the skinny B because she just drinks what’s in that bottle instead of eating?? Just sayin.
Love that stove and that faucet hanging there. WOW

  23. Oh I want that stove, I have the yuckiest stove in the whole world!! I am so going to make that chili..we finally have for reals Fall weather here in San Diego and i think that will be just the ticket…even if I do have to make it on the horrible stove :)

  24. WOO HOO glad you won the chili cookoff – dang that stuff is good isn’t it – how can you beat those ingrediants, then through in Frito’s – YUMMM. Gotta try your way – sounds like a great addition. Of course I LOVE the stove – it’s the same one I got, only I went with 6 burners rather than a griddle. I figured with the boys gone the burners would get more use than a griddle. Loved your post about the banana bikes and quilts – those bikes sure brought back memories. Hope life is treating you good sister :).

    Hugs – Mrs. Farmhouse

  25. ohhhh yummmmmy! What exactly is 8 oz. bag shredded Monterey Jack Cheese, 1 package Fritos corn chips
Chopped and fresh cilantro? The rest of the ingredients is on my kitchenshelves… LOL! Kidding! No, just send me a some chili in a US postal envelope!

  26. That chili recipe sounds so good. Yum, I want to try that. I’ve never tasted white chili. Your pics are so gorgeous, I felt like I was looking at a magazine.

  27. Looks wonderful… and I really need to try this,.. winter is coming and I need something warm!!!! Have a question… the cumin…here in Sweden we have two kinds.. one used in bread and one very much used in india and mexico…( I´ll guess thats the one)… hope so!! :o)

  28. I love your little dome! I’m not one for cheese but I’ll take your word on the chili and pass it on to someone I know would love it. So, silly question, what is that faucety thing in the middle of the wall where the tile goes??

  29. We love white chicken chili, I am going to try your recipe ~~~ Love Ms Farmhouse too, she has a wonderful blog! Your sisters new kitchen looks great.

  30. Thanks for the lovely chili recipe…
can you please let me know where you purchased the dome with the engraved Patisserie?
    :)

  31. how fun that you had your very own chili cook off. can i join your family please? :) i’ve had white chili before, but never creamy white chili. i’m adding it to my growing soup list. even if it does make your heart seize up. LOL. thanks for sharing it!

  32. skinny b’s kitchen makes me swoon.
when i grow up i’m going to have a faucet over my range like hers.
i also plan on being incredibly thin like her.
    and taller like her too.
i was very scared when i saw the chili that won because i thought it was cornflakes on top.
i started to scream… but then i read further and was able to recover.
    i’ll try your chili soon!
thanks to you and ms. farmhouse. i met her at market.
    :waves madly
