Thimbleanna

Beehives

Oh, thank you so much for all the wonderful comments on my friendship quilt!  I had such fun reading through them all.  You do know that all the credit goes to the quilty peeps don’t you?  Jewels, Junie and Gurney are the best quilty peeps ever.  (Well, there’s that little noblog flaw, but we’ll let that slip.)  I’m especially excited that a few of you have e-mailed me to say that you’ve already talked to your quilty peeps and you’re going to do a similar block exchange.  You won’t regret it — it’s SO fun!  Among the comments was one from Sarah — when she saw the beehive block she asked if I’d seen the June Martha Stewart Living magazine with the beehive on the cover.  (Photo from Martha’s site where you can find the recipe for this cake.)

Martha's Beehive

Yes, indeedy I did — I love that beehive cake!  In my true Martha wannabe fashion, I made a beehive cake and blogged about it last year on my old blog.  Now that I see the two pictures together, I’m noticing that my pan isn’t exactly the same as Martha’s.

Anna's Beehive

And drat.  Her pan is cuter.  And my cake’s not professionally photographed.  But it’s ok, ’cause she got the idea from me.  ‘Cause I blogged about it first.  Right?  She read my blog and decided to put a beehive cake on her cover.  Right?  Sure.  Let’s go with that story ’cause it’s way more fun LOL!  Also, Sarah mentioned that Martha didn’t say where to get the pan and I told her Williams Sonoma, but I noticed the web site says the pan is from nordicware.com.  I think Martha’s cheating a bit on her source, ’cause the beehive pan at the Nordicware site is the same pan as mine, not the cute pan that Martha used with the ropey coils.  Oh well.

Hey, one more quick thing … there’s a new blog on the block (with a few more to be outed soon!)  A reader from way back is finally blogging.  I always called her MSN Judy, but I had the name wrong, she’s Brocante and Etc. And she’s such a devoted reader, she even named her cat after me LOL!!!  (Ok, just kidding, but like the Martha story it sounds good!)  So, run over there and welcome sweet Judy to blogland.

Yipee — it’s humpday — bring on the weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Anna, you are so sweet. Thank you for the free advertising. Or am I going to receive a bill? I love the Martha cake story. And of course I named my Anna after you.

  2. Dang that Martha and her pan. Its from her old online website from years ago.. I wanted that pan so darn bad but it was so expensive… I just couldn’t justify it. I like your cake best, more frosting!!!

  3. Anna – you’re a nut! I love your cake…True, Martha’s does look really professional…but I really believe your story about her copying you!
:) Have a good rest of the week!

  4. That’s an adorable cake and I’m totally sure that she’s copying you, lol!!
That’s an amazing quilt, I’m not a bit surprised that you got lots of comments on it. I love the covered wagon and the teapot and the sheep and….well, all of it! Plus of course it’s doubly special because it was made with your friends.
Sorry to hear about your peonies – that would make me sad! : ( Must have been the same storm that my Ft Wayne sil told me was taking out her power!
(isn’t this weather unreal – I am feeling so fortunate that our fields aren’t under a bunch of water right now!)

  5. Yes, of course Martha copied you – it’s quite clear!

I once made Nigella’s chocolate coated honey cake complete with fondant icing bees and a Lego Winnie the Pooh for a little person’s birthday. The grown ups loved it ;-)

  6. So good to know Martha gets her inspiration from such great sources!! I also think your cake looks much more yummy – the divine Martha’s looks like it’s made of ceramic!

    xxx

  7. No doubt…Martha is a Thimbleanna wannabee! LOL! I like your cake better…lots more frosting and more inviting…it’s just begging to be eaten.

  8. Well, I see that Pam said the real pan is from her website years ago. It would be nice of the martha drones to disclose that, no? LOL

Either way, I think a beehive is in my future.

  9. I drooled so much on that mag at Lowes they made me buy it. :) My name means ‘honeybee’ so I’m in love with all things beeish.

Enjoyed your post today. And add me to the list of lovers of your amazing friendship quilt yesterday too!

When oh when are you coming south?

  10. Okay, okay….I think your beehive cake is ‘a good thing’. It is quite sweet. It would be fun on many occassions….an afternoon tea, family reunions and picnics, a baby shower (oh, a winnie the pooh theme would make it quite cute), and I could probably go on about it. Martha schmartha….she has nothing on you, Anna. You are just as talented and creative, and you are quite funny. Thanks for the apron tips, I may have to try those out some night. ;)

  11. Hey I’m the one who should make that cake!!! Now I gotta find that website . . . hmmm. Your cake is just as cute as marth’s by the way.

  12. That martha is so naughty for copying you and then going a step further by getting a more detailed pan than yours! It does look so yummy and cute!

  13. Well of course where you first tread, we all follow!!! Of course Martha got the idea from you Anna, when she starts teasing innocent little people with mashed potato then I’ll know for sure!

  14. It is Friday as I am reading this, so our weekend is almost upon us!
Your cake looks nicer, because it hasnt been all tarted up with hairspray & other stuff they use for photographs. Those ropey coils might just be photoshop! haha.

  15. Well Anna, you know that Martha doesn’t do her own work and YOU DO! So that has to count for something, right?

I like your beehive cake and wish I had a nibble to go along with my coffee right now. I’ll try licking the monitor and see what happens.

  16. Anna, you go!!! At this rate, Martha will never be able to catch up with your pace since she *is* a year behind and all!

  17. Hi Anna, Well I finally have some time to comment on your posts…yeah!! 1st I love your wedding posts…fabulous! What a fabulous quilt and story about its humble beginnings! Also, your beehive cake probably tasted better than Martha’s…so there, Martha!

  18. Anna….love the cake….AND Martha Stewart probably didn’t bake that cake for the photo shoot either….LOL.
Now, because of your blog I have 2 cake pans on my shopping list…LOL…the cupcake cake pan and now this beehive pan. Ah, well, I suppose there are worse things to have to shop for.

  19. O.k. so you know that MS cake was probably shellaced to death and is inedible. The things they do to perfectly good food to get a good picture is criminal!!! So I vote for your cake!!

  20. I love your beehive cake and am thinking about getting a pan to make one, too. Just thinking about that cake makes my mouth water.

  21. I am sure yours tastes better than Martha’s. I’m still drooling over the giant cupcake cake you previously posted about. And since I’m catching up on my reading…I love that friendship quilt.
    Hugs,
    Susan

  22. I love your beehive cake! Looks amazing. I am sure yours was way better than Martha’s. I am going to have to investigate those pan (not that I really need any more cake tins…lol)

  23. I surely do remember your cake from last year! That Martha….she’s known for doing such things from time to time! LOL!

Your friendship is absolutely beautiful Anna!

  24. When I saw the cover of June’s MSL I thought of you. I was convinced that Martha took the idea from your blog. I still am. XO

  25. So, you’re not the only one that thinks Martha did a little false advertising regarding the pan. A link for this cake came into my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was so cute that I followed the link to her site. Someone left a comment that the source she had given for the pan was NOT the same one as in the picture. MARTHA IS BUSTED ONCE AGAIN! Do you think she’ll get jail time? ROFL!!!

  26. Martha is such a copy-cat! I like your beehive cake better than hers, that’s for true. I think Kairle’s comment is too funny! I don’t think Martha will get jail time for this faux pas, do you? Naw…..

  27. I called into Martha’s Ask Martha radio show on Sirius and asked her about cinnamon because I was having a cinnamon tasting party. She seemed to realy like my idea. Well, guess what? About a month later on her TV show, they did a segment on hosting a cinamon tasting. I KNOW she copied me. But, I am flattered.

  28. My niece has the Nordicware pan and I helped her make the cake according to the instructions. It turned out perfectly and was delicious. Its true the pan is not as fun as Martha’s but it is flying off the shelf at Williams Sonoma. I’m sure that they couldn’t bee happier with the cover of the magazine.
