Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Wow! You guys are the best readers anywhere! Thank You for all the mug cozy love! I had several questions about how to make that little mug cozy and you’d be surprised at how easy it was to make. I think it only took me about 3 hours, start to finish.

Mug Cozy

It’s just a little rectangle mini-quilt. Draw a few little flowers out on a piece of fabric, embroider them, and then add 1-inch blocks around the outside. Finish it just like you would any other quilt with a backing, batting and binding. Then sew two buttons to each end. Wrap it around your mug and stretch a small sized ponytail holder between each set of buttons. (You just can see them in the photo above.) Easy Peasy! I would have taken a better picture of the button thingy, but it’s now at work doing its job. It’s either working well, or I’m drinking my tea faster, but the tea isn’t getting cold now until very close to the bottom of the mug.

Among all of your fab comments was one from Isabelle suggesting that I make a patchwork roof cosy. Which is exactly what I’ve been thinking.

Tree Roof

That’s precisely why I have nothing else to report today — you wouldn’t believe how long it takes to make a quilt big enough to cover that south end of the house. And then, being the over-achiever that I am (ha!), I had to make more than one for a little change up now and then.

I’m thinking this could be a new market niche.  Wouldn’t it be cool if you could drive down the street and see a quilt on every roof?  And certainly, today deserves a quilt all its own. Somewhere, way back in my genealogy, I remember seeing someone born in Ireland. That probably makes me about 1/50th Irish, but I’m counting it.

I hope you didn’t get pinched today. If you did, I hope you enjoyed it {wink}{wink}. I’m off to get to work on the Easter Roof Cozy!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Hi Anna,
*LOL* ~ what a gorgeous idea to ‘make’ a roof cozy …and a special one for St. Patrick’s day…!!
Great idea but perhaps I’ll stick with the tea mug cozy for once…
    Hugs, Julia

  2. That mug cosy really is gorgeous. I looked at it, loved it, but I’m not sure I commented- I’m fairly sure why – ‘Muuuuummmmmmmeeeeeee’! The little stitchery and the colours are just delightful.

Now roof cosies! Hee! The Irish one is fab. Excellent computer tinkering too!

  3. OMG! You are too funny! This post should have come with the warning…DO NOT READ WHILE DRINKING YOUR MORNING COFFEE…I’m still laughing.

  4. OMG! roof cozies? how fabulous! you will be featuring a tutorial soon, i hope? i so want to make a bunch for everyone in my neighborhood! ??? p.s. you are amazingly clever and thank you for the laugh!

  5. Anna banana! How on God’s green earth did you make your roof quilts so quickly??? My great grandmothers best friend made one for her roof back in the 18oo’s and it took her FOREVER!!! You are such an overachiever, and quick, at that!!
Ok, so the ponytail holder is a brilliant idea. Thanks for the tips!

  6. I think you’ve lost it. knock knock anyone in there? (that would be me knockin on your head!) LOL You crack me up! You get the best post for the day! ;o) ooxx`jodi

  7. Oh, Anna, I’m so glad you posted the mug cozy again! I loved seeing it the first time but never got around to leaving a comment about it. You’ve got my wheels spinning on making my own, as I’m a slow sipper, too.

And the roof cozy? Perfect! Do you think you could design one for my barn?…

    XO

  8. you’re insane.
i’m curious as to why we make a quilt for our mugs… but that’s okay.
happy belated st. patrick’s day. i didn’t wear green, and no one dared to pinch me!
    .oO WHEW!
    :waves madly
    b.

  9. I love the new roof. Do the planners in your area have any say on what colour your roof should be?? So which of the 3 enormous quilts that you made in a few hours yesterday is your favourite? Did you make them from waterproof fabric so that the rain stays out?

As Lucy Locket says – you are bonkers – but that’s a good thing!!

  10. I sometimes see quilts hung out to air on porches….they always turn my head. But the day I see a quilt on a roof I’ll be slamming on the brakes and turning into that driveway ’cause I’ll know for sure there must be a crazy lady named Thimbleanna within!
Oh, and if you’re taking orders, Guess which one I’d like?

  11. I love the mug cozy. I may just have to whip up one of those for my morning coffee mug. I had to chuckle at the roof quilts.

  12. Your mug cozy is ADORABLE! I love the little stitched flowers. I’ve been making little quilted coffee cozies for my ‘to go’ coffee, but now want to make one of these for my mug of tea at home. Oh, and a new one for my french press, and for my cold arms…ok maybe not the arms. x

  13. Thank you for sharing how you made that adorable cozy as I fell instantly in love with it.

And the roof ideas are totally fabulous. When we move in a couple of years, I may ask you to design a roof cozy for us (LOL). Love the very imaginative ideas about this concept.

  14. OH. MY. ROOFING. GOSH. I love your roof-cozy! Especially the with that friendship quilt of yours I love so much. I adore your tea-cozy too, but your photo-chopped roof is da bomb!

PS… you scored major cool points here at the hacienda… I showed this to hubby and DS and they too thought it was so cool!

  15. I LOVE the idea of a roof quilt!!! Your mug cozy is exactly what I need. I never seem to finish my tea before it gets cold. Great job Anna.

  16. I LOVE the idea of a roof quilt!!! Your mug cozy is exactly what I need. I never seem to finish my tea before it gets cold. Great job Anna.

  17. I LOVE the idea of a roof quilt!!! Your mug cozy is exactly what I need. I never seem to finish my tea before it gets cold. Great job Anna.

  18. Pinched? Do you get pinched on St Patrick’s Day over there?

Mind you, we get pinched AND punched on the first of every month so perhaps it’s not that odd after all ;-)

  19. The coffee mug cozy is just wonderful – I want one! I think you should send your roof cozy to President Obama as your solution to rising energy costs. Just think of all the quilters that could be put to work making the roof cozys and then you would have their husbands that would be put to work installing them. And since you change them with the holidays and seasons, this would be jobs that would last for a long time.

  20. I really do love that mug cozy! Thanks for sharing the idea and instructions with us…you make it sound so easy! Love the idea of a roof cozy…so funny! Unfortunately, my roof is in need of one too. =)

  21. lol Anna, you’re hilarious. I can’t wait to see the Easter roof cozy . . . ;o)

And I need to make a couple of mini quilts. My mug isn’t perfectly cylindrical, so my quilt might need to be trapezoidal . . . but it’s such an excruciatingly cute idea. And one I can finish before I’m too old to see the needle!

    So pretty!

  22. At this rate, you could start a cozy making business. “Need a cover for your roof, barbecue, car, etc.? Come to Thimbleanna’s for your all your cozy needs! Nothing’s too big or too small – Anna’s is the place to call!” Just a thought……
I’m still in love with the mug cozy, by the by. Have a great weekend!!

  23. Hello, dear Thimbleanna and Happy Belated St. Patrick’s Day! I love the roof cozy mischief that you are up to over here, LOL! You’re such a funny gal! I love it, LOL! :)

  24. Hey-you could actually make one of those roofcozies out of oilcloth! No batting-then you could actually put one up and leave it there!
