Happy Valentine’s Day!

Yipes — I’m sneaking in just under the wire to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.  I hope your day was filled with Chocolate!

Valentine Pillow

I managed to get my little Valentine’s embroideries done and one of them finished into a pillow to give to MeMum for her Valentine.

Valentine Pillow

I started these a few years ago, so I’m counting them as another UFO finish for this year.  WooHoo!  They’re from an old Bareroots pattern that I’ve had for quite a few years.

Valentine Pillow

And just to prove my true love for Mummy, I took one for the team.  I was sewing along on the machine and zipped my thumb right under the needle.*  Slick as a whistle, that needle zipped in one side of my thumb, poked out the other side, and then withdrew.  It was a case of perfect timing — I heard the machine groan a bit and snatched my thumb out of there in the split second that the needle was up before it came down and started stitching again.  In all my years of sewing, I’ve never done that.  The needle didn’t even break.

Thumb Ouch

I was kind of disappointed that the bobbin didn’t engage, which would have attached me to the pillow.  I could have left that thread hanging through my thumb.  A body piercing badge of honor.  All you belly button piercers got nuttin’ on someone with a sewing machine!

Valentine Smoochies!

XOXO,
Anna

*Pardon the goofy picture — I know it looks like someone’s big toe.  You try taking a close up picture of your own thumb at a weird angle — it’s not easy!  ;-D

  1. Ooh, you have my sympathies. Be there, done that. Only it wasn’t my thumb, I literally sewed thru my fingernail and broke the needle off with part if it sticking out the other side. Hope you are up to date on your tetanus shot….

  2. Love the pillows. MeMum must know how lucky she is!

What did you do about your thumb? That’s got to hurt. I did something similar with my mother’s machine when she had her back turned for a minute. I was three at the time….What’s your excuse?!

  3. Oh, geez, Anna! Ouch!! Bad machine. Bad machine. But, your embroidery is gorgeous! Also, I am now going to have nightmares of a giant thumb with two-holes-that-are-not-supposed-to-be-there in it. ;)

  4. OUCH – I can’t tell you the number of times that has come close to happening to me – and I’m sure you as well – this one got ya. Hope it heals quickly Sunshine – BTW that pillow is adorable and I’m sure MeMum LOVED it :).

    Hugs – Karen

  5. Happy Valentine’s Day to you!!! I made that pillow too. Several of them. It’s so cute isn’t it? I shrunk the pattern down and made little bitty ones too.
My machine jumped up and bit my thumb exactly like yours did. OUCH!!!
That was quite the close up of your toe uhhh I mean thumb. lolol

  6. Badge of honor,eh?! I had the needle break in half and one half still in my index finger. I had to pull it out myself. I was so paranoid that I got a tetanus shot after that. I hope your thumb is alright now.

  7. Ouch!! I’ve never done that on the machine, but I have managed to put the needle through my finger when hand quilting! Your little embroideries are lovely …… the little Blankits I am working on have revived my interest in embroidery.

  8. OUCH!!!!

So, you’ve referenced UFOs… and we all have them. How do you keep track of yours? How many do you have? Would you be willing to share that info? ;-)

  9. Such a nice Valentine gift. I have never done that to my finger (at least not yet), and that’s the one thing that keeps me from teaching Frannie how to use a machine. She can get distracted quite easily and that just sends shivers down my spine. So, for now, it’s just hand sewing for her. She’s doing really well with it too – we have to post all the little pillows she has made in the last couple of months. As a matter of fact, Santa filled her stocking with all kinds of pink sewing tools. I just don’t know where he found them!

  10. Oh dear, oh dear, that looks painful. Did you know that chocolate is good for injuries like that? I hope you got plenty to help you over the worst! Love the cute cushion you’ve made for you mum.

  11. Ouchy Anna!! I usually get my pointer finger in the needle, done it a few times now, and I ALWAYS break the needle! lol

Cute pillows! Great job finishing them.

  12. Ross warned me that there was a nasty picture on your blog so – though sympathetic – I didn’t linger on it, being somewhat squeamish. Hope it’s better soon!

  13. I sewed thru my finger once. My newer machine has a slightly different rhythm and I was free motion quilting. But I think the real reason it happen to me was that I made fun of people who sewed thru their fingers. It was a lesson in humility. You’re too nice to need that! Thank goodness the needle didn’t break. xo

  14. OOOOOOOOHHHHHH, that gave me the “willies”! It’s going to make me a lot more cautious. I love the pillow. It’s darling!!!

  15. So sad to see your thumb! I hope you mend quickly. Your pillows are delightful. Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day.

  16. EEEEEeeeeeewwwwwwwOOOOOOooooouuuucccchhhhhhSSSSSSsssshhhhhhhhhh…….ooooooooooooooooooot!!!!!!!!!!
My stomach feels kinda squishy. Yuck. Too bad you didn’t shed any blood on Moms valentine – it would have just gone with the motive. I’ve heard of people stapling their fingers so I guess it’s only right that with all your sewing that could happen too. I had a good valentines day with my yorkie Maddie. She was my special one this year. I don’t think she really understood the concept… Be safe my friend.

  17. I cannot believe you actually drew the needle in – Anna! What are you trying to do to us here?!

Ouch, ouch ouch, hope it is not too sore. I know exactly how many nerves serve the tips of fingers and thumbs so I’m guessing it throbbed rather a lot …

  18. Oh gosh, that is awful!! Glad to hear that you were able to snatch your thumb out before it took a second stitch! :)

    Love the embroideries! Just beautiful!

  19. Lovin’ that pillow!!! Sorry for your owie. :(. I am always afraid Amelia is going to do that when she sews on my machine.

  20. Miss Anna, are you current on your tetnaus shot? If not, go in and get a booster. ;p

I had the needle break off in my finger…ouch. It wasn’t fun getting it out but we suffer for our art, don’t we? ;p

  21. Your poor thumb – ow. But I see you manfully avoided blood on the project, which as we stitchers know, is the most important thing!

  22. Ouch, ouch, ouch……. Are you soaking it in warm water. I am still cringing.
On a much better note, your pillow is so charming. I bet your Mum loved it. It really is the sweetest valentine treasure.

  23. Akkk, you poor thing. I hope you screamed bloody murder (everyone feels better when they scream!!) Well happy belated Valentines day, I hope you finger was not hurting you too much xox Clarice

  24. Re my mysterious picture – the background is a Ritz biscuit and you can work out the rest by yourself, I’m sure. Sorry if you don’t have Ritz biscuits in the US! (I mean, sorry because you couldn’t have worked out the joke. The biscuits themselves are no great loss.)

  25. Ouch, ouch, OUCH! You are such a brave daughter. Hope your mum doubly appreciated the gift! Well done for finishing! Here’s a x to make you feel better!

  26. The emboridery on the pillow is so beautiful. What a sweet gift. And it has a little of your DNA in it, a little extra gift. It truly is handmade (ha ha).

  27. oh. my. gosh.
anna. i can’t believe it went all the way through your thumb!
    :cringes
    i love your little embroideries.
    did your mom just swoon?
i think she’s the luckiest girl ever.
happy very belated valentine’s day to my favorite imaginiary friend.
    :waves madly

  28. Yeowch. I have done that with my machine before, my stitching sympathies!!

    Loved your UFO though!!

    Sas

  29. late to the game! hope your v-day dinner was good!
LOVE your pillow to MeMum…you are so talented!
should have been wearing a thimble…THIMBLEANNA!
    hope you are healing!!
    LOL LNB

  30. guess you cannot wear a thimble when machine sewing…you should invent some sort of device…unless there all ready is something on the market…since i am not a quilter (but so very much do enjoy your blog!!) …hope i do not appear …well…uninformed…ignorant…not versed on all things sewing & quilting!

  31. I hope your thumb is healing quickly, wow, I can’t imagine that happening and will be very careful not to let it. Your embroidery is beautiful and what a wonderful gift. I loved reading about the peeps, so nice to have good friends to enjoy things with.

  32. Major Owwwwwiiieeee!

Oh wait… I’ve done that. Except I didn’t have your beautiful stitchery and pillow to show for it. I just knew it! I can’t even take one for the team properly. :)

I would ask if you’ve healed by now but that bread looks amazing so I’ll guess “yes”. At least I hope that’s the answer.

  33. Oooh nasty, thread through it would have passed me out lol. BUT how brave you were to carry on, they say there’s no gain without pain and just look at what you gained, beautiful pillows to cherish. I hope it’s beginning to heal now.

  34. Love the pillows! I have to admit that, years ago, I did the very same thing…with an entry wound and an exit wound!!! I think the neighbor next door heard me yell! Good news is: I’ve never done it again…

  35. Happy Valentines day to you too! How did your big toe get sewn? Just kidding. So, you don’t have long nails either. Wow, another thing we have in common! Don’t mind me, I’m just lacking way too much sleep. Have lots accomplished, just no energy to blog about it! Have a great day!

  36. Oooooh, Anna! That looks painful. And that photo is … disgusting. My kinda girl! :) Hope you healed ok. Sorry I’ve been such a baaaaad blogger friend. Since I missed Valentine’s Day, is it too early to wish you a Happy St Patrick’s? LOL!

Hey are you going to Market? I’m probably not … but hopefully Houston again.

    miss you
