Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! I’m a day late with my annual viewing of Christmas Eve breakfast, but you know — it’s a busy time of the year! This years selection was Grandma Hill’s Browned Butter Cookies, Angel Slices, Lemon Gems, and Classic Sugar Cookies. Sadly, no caramels this year as I broke my caramel pan the day before I was to make them and have had no time to order a replacement.  Anyway, it’s favorite cookie time of the year!

Thimbleanna: Christmas

I’ve been a little grumpy this time around — having to do with a certain telecommunications store, a Christmas purchase, and then several e-mails to the recipient of the Christmas purchase from the stupid store after the stupid store assured me several times that the e-mails wouldn’t be sent. Totally ruined the surprise and my Christmas spirit. Bah Humbug!

Thimbleanna: Christmas

Alas, Christmas truly does come but once a year, so I’ve had to give myself a little pep talk and get over it. I hope you’re having a Wonderful Christmas and that Santa brings you your heart’s desire!!!

An Advent Calendar

Whoa!  Two posts in one week.  I can’t remember the last time that happened — it’s been several years at least.  It’s Christmas though, and I like to keep a record of things we make and do, so I’m back again to record my biggest project for this Christmas.

I decided to make an Advent Calendar for FinallyAGirl this year. She’s definitely too young to get the concept of one-ornament-a-day, but I thought she might have fun playing with the ornaments this year, and the calendar will be ready when she knows what’s going on.

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

I started working on the ornaments during the last week of October.  I knew it would take awhile, but hoped that if I could finish one ornament a day, I’d be done with them by Thanksgiving.  Haha.  I couldn’t keep up.  I finally finished them the first week in December.  Pinterest was my best friend during the process — there’s tons of felt inspiration out there.

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

Of course, there had to be a little ornament to celebrate her best buddy, Winston.  The little gingerbread man is holding a string of beads that spell her name and the star doesn’t have a hanger because it has velcro on the back to stick it on the tree on the 24th of December.

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

When I saw felt puffins on Pinterest, I knew I had to include them.  And the same with the little llama (Llama Llama Red Pajama!). (And that orange bell is my very least favorite — it really MUST go.)

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

It really doesn’t matter what order the ornaments are put into the calendar, although the star really should be last.  And I prefer the little baby Jesus ornament to be saved for the 23rd too  — after all, you’re counting down to celebrate his birth.

After the ornaments were finished, I constructed the actual calendar and I was pretty much just winging it.  I wanted the pockets to be big enough to hold each ornament and maybe a little treat if her Mummy decides she’d like to do that each year.  The numbers were embroidered with my embroidery machine — I love love LOVE that Clarence font.  It’s so beautifully digitized and every time I use it I spend way too much time running my fingers over the letters and numbers because they feel so cool.  Clarence alone is a great reason to buy a Viking machine LOL.  (Note to self for next time I make one of these: the numbers are in a file called TheGirlsAdventCalendarNumbers.  I had to add this note because, two years later,  I’ve spent all day searching for the files and finally found them!)

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

I used a moda linen fabric for the background and attached the tree, the trunk and the star halo with a thin applique stitch on my machine and then I quilted the whole thing.  The very last step was to randomly attach 23 buttons to the tree — fortunately, I can sew buttons on with my machine.

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

I finished this little project around the 10th of December.  I didn’t worry that it was late, because, as I mentioned FinallyAGirl is too young to know what’s going on.  But, she loves to be busy and she sure gets the concept of playing around with something fun.  The calendar looks huge, but luckily, she won’t be this small forever.

Thimbleanna: Advent Calendar

This was a really fun project and I’m hoping to make more in the future. It was a ton of work though, so I need a little break LOL. Now, back to the wrapping, cleaning and baking and the last minute crunch. I hope it’s all going well for you!

XOXO,

Gingerbread Houses 2018

We’re in the final countdown, boys and girls! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s LESS than 10 days until Christmas. Are you ready? I’m woefully behind (as always), but I’m not hosting our Christmas soiree this year, so I can relax about it. On our off years, we don’t do a big tree, so I’m going to try and decorate a little one this afternoon. Shopping still needs a lot of work — I went to target last week and picked up a few rolls of wrapping paper, but I don’t remember carrying them into the house, so I’m thinking I left them there. {Sigh}. I’ll have to get that worked out this afternoon too.

In the meantime, I finally had a little time to sit down and sort through pictures from the annual Gingerbread House Competition. I was looking back on the blog — it seems we missed the last two years — {Gasp!} It’s almost impossible to get all the kids together these days, now that they’re older, but we had them all here on Thanksgiving this year. We decorated the houses on Thanksgiving Eve, and everyone was here except for TheSecondChild. We thought he’d be with us, but at the last minute, he was offered the option to work on the Friday after Thanksgiving or work late on Thanksgiving Eve and have Friday off, so he opted for the latter. We missed him terribly while doing the houses, but we gained an extra day with him, so it was all good!

I’ll start off by saying, the pictures are AWFUL this year. ;-( The light wasn’t the best this time around, so I cranked up the ISO on my camera and went too far and overexposed everything. I’ve tried to tone them down a little on the computer so that some of the details would show, and it’s resulted in really blurry pictures. Plus, I missed all the cute little details on a lot of the houses and we ran out of time — some of us definitely wanted to add more details to our houses.  Oh well, the important thing is that we have a record of the houses so we can remember how much fun we had!

This was our first year with FinallyAGirl and it was so fun. She didn’t really get the decorating idea though, and was a lot more interested in eating the frosting. Poor SweetiePie would pipe a beautiful line of frosting and FinallyAGirl would stick her finger in it. There were a lot of jokes implying that if you wanted to sabotage the competition, just send FinallyAGirl to the other team to “help” LOL.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

First up, is the team of CuteNephew and his girlfriend.  They went with the theme of all these states that are now legalizing marijuana and made themselves a little pot plantation.  Everything in green.  Naughty Naughty.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

Team 2 was CuteNiece2 and her boyfriend.  They were also casual and did a beach scene with a tiki hut.  Very clever use of colored frosting on all those surfboards.  And don’t miss all the nude sunbathers.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

Team 3 was CuteNiece1 and her fiancee.  (Yes!  We have an engagement — very exciting!)  These two are lovingly referred to as our resident hippies and they came through with a bohemian village.  They spent lots of time on all of the little details — I love the little campfire and the “bead” doorway into the house, or tent, or cardboard box LOL.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

And then we have Team 4 — MyDadLovesMeBestSister and CrazyBIL.  This is the second year that CrazyBIL has forgotten what he did in previous years and repeated a theme.  We caught him last time and he changed his theme (which resulted in a partially unbloggable house), but we were all so busy this year that it was too late by the time we saw his house.  So, this is the second rendition of Trump’s wall.  Interesting though, ’cause it’s very different than the last version.  I love their clever use of pretzels this year!  I’ll let you decide if they’re supportive of the wall or making fun of it LOL.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

Team5 was TheFirstChild, SweetiePie and FinallyAGirl.  They decided to go with a traditional candy house with a red and white theme.  SweetiePie does such pretty frosting work.  Plus — Santa!!!

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

TheManoftheHouse and I made a pirate ship.  One of the friends who has been with us at the competition in previous years has thrown all caution to the wind, quit his job, and is sailing around the carribean.  He’s having a great time and now actually looks like a pirate with a full-grown scruffy beard. So, our house was an ode to his voyage. The roof is our attempt at the rough blue sea.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

It was fun to put the mast on top of the house — there were a few nay-sayers in the crowd when I piped the roping LOL.

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

As is our custom, we voted for the winner.  Do you think my favorite traditional gingerbread house won???

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

Noooo.  It was those crazy kids and their Tiki House.  Apparently everyone is dreaming of an island vacation – maybe Santa should re-think his gift list this year!

Thimbleanna: Gingerbread Houses

There you have it!!! Another year in the books. Have fun this week with your final Christmas prep!

A Baby Doll Carrier

Well hello — how’s it going out there? Do all you Christmas friends have everything under control??? I’m completely out of it over here. No decorating. No shopping. Nothing. Well, except for a little Christmas sewing — I might be baking or wrapping at midnight on the 24th, but I don’t plan to be sewing LOL.

So, in complete denial about the pending big event, I’ll show you a little doll carrier I made our little cherub several weeks ago. Well, it was probably longer than that — it was when Little Sister was born, and I wanted Big Sister to have a baby carrier so she could carry her babies around just like mommy.

Thimbleanna: Doll Carrier

This was such a fun little project and from what I could tell, FinallyAGirl really liked it.  The pattern is from Evelune on Etsy and the instructions were really clear and easy to understand.  I used the Home Sweet Home fabrics that I have available in my etsy shop and I added a sweet little monogram to the front pocket.

Thimbleanna: Doll Carrier

I love that the straps criss-cross in the back — it’s such a neat design — it keeps them from getting tangled.

Thimbleanna: Doll Carrier

FinallyAGirl spent some time checking all the features out.  Or maybe she was just checking the baby’s diaper — haha.  She definitely takes good care of her baby.  Her baby gets her own little blankie when they go to bed at night.  When they’re here visiting, it’s the little goldilocks quilt that I made for the doll crib.  I love seeing her play with the things I’ve made!

Thimbleanna: Doll Carrier

The only extras besides pattern and fabric that you need for this little carrier are snaps and those parachute buckles on the sides.  I had a really hard time finding white buckles locally, so I ended up ordering them on amazon.  While I was making this carrier, I went ahead and cut out one for FinallyAnotherGirl.  Before we know it, she’ll be needing one too.  I didn’t get it quite finished, but I have a little time left LOL.

Thimbleanna: Doll Carrier

Anyway, in case you need a quick, fun project for a little girl for Christmas, this is a great choice! Now, I must run back to the advent calendar I’m working on for the cherub. I’m ALMOST finished with it — hoping to wrap it up this weekend — it’s sort of late haha. Good thing she’s too little to know the difference.
Happy Merry Making!

The Happy Flower Quilt

Whoosh!  Just like that another month has whizzed by and Thanksgiving is upon us.  I would ponder where October went, but really, where did the whole year go?  It’s been a busy year here, but I always try to slip in as much time for sewing when I can — otherwise, I get grumpy LOL.  I finished the Happy Flower Quilt top a few months ago, and I love it!

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I participated in an online quilt-a-long run by Ms. Pretty By Hand.  Over the course of a year, we completed 2 blocks a week (there are 99 blocks in the quilt) and when we were done, we were on our own to finish the borders.  I loved the quilt-a-long — it’s always nice to have a goal, and doing 2 blocks a week was doable and fun.  The pattern was from the book Happy Flower Quilts by Atsuko Matsuyama.

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I used lots of my favorite scraps and many Japanese prints that I had in my little etsy shop.  (There are several more prints scheduled to arrive this week — they’re so cute, I wish they’d been in time for this quilt!)  I loved every minute of sewing these little blocks — so many cute patterns.

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

Each week we completed one pieced block and one applique block which was surrounded by a border.  I chose to use the same pink that the original book used for the little border strips.

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I debated a long time about what fabric to use for the big borders.  I originally wanted a check print like the one used in the book, but I couldn’t find one that I liked, so I decided to stick with the Moda Bella Betty’s Pink that I used in the little block borders.  I think it will work great and will really show off the quilting.

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I’ve also really been debating how to quilt it.  When a quilt has this much hand stitching in it, I can’t bear to have it machine quilted, so it will be hand quilted.  I’ve seen some really cute in-progress quilts on Instagram that are using big-stitch quilting, so, I might do that.  Or, I might do fine hand quilting.  That would only take me until I’m dead LOL.  Maybe I’ll just ship it off to a hand quilter — we’ll see.

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I do have a favorite block, just FYI, lol.  It’s the cute little honeybee block below.  One of MeMum’s first quilting projects was a honeybee pillow, so I’m partial to the block.  I’d love to make an entire quilt out of little 6-inch scrappy honeybee blocks — so Fun!

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

And now, it’s the sprint to Thanksgiving! The little cherubs are arriving on Tuesday and I’m SO excited. Plus, ALL the kids will be together this week (the first time in several years) so we’re going to be playing with gingerbread. I have a LOT to do — must get to it ;-D!
Have a wonderful week — and a Very Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends!
XOXO,
Anna
