Quilts from …Well, You Know …

Thanks for all your nice comments about my friendship quilt.  I hope you’ve all been having fun checking out all the quilts at Amy’s Quilt Festival.  Amy must be wondering what kind of a monster she’s created — there are sure a lot of beautiful quilts to enjoy.

I wish I could tell you something exciting.  I spent my weekend wrestling my have-to quilting project.  I’m determined to get these t-shirt quilts done for a friend — they’ve been sitting here nagging me for over two years.  I’ve promised myself that I won’t start anything new until they’re finished.  The tops are put together (two of them) and I quilted the first one this weekend.  There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.  Oh, to have a long-arm.  My dear Hester didn’t like that heavy t-shirt material one little bit, poor girl.

T Shirt Quilt

I hope to never make another t-shirt quilt.  Maybe in a weak moment, but, in general, I’m just not a fan.  In the meantime, not being able to start something new and fun has been torture.  There are so many pretty, new quilts and fabric on blogs — the inspiration is endless.  Only one more weekend to get the other top quilted and then maybe I can work on something fun.

I’m off to NJ in the morning for a quick trip.  I’m hoping you’ll all keep me entertained in the evenings!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Hope you get them finished in record time! I spent yesterday doing clothing alterations – not my favourite type of sewing at all!!

  2. Good for you for getting these suckers done! It can be torture finishing a project that you are just sick of. Your friend will love them, and your quilting looks gorgeous! Have a wonderful trip my sista’. xo

  3. I guess that you and I both did do the same thing…. pull out quilts we haven’t worked on in a while. But doesn’t it feel good to complete it?? Where in NJ are you going? That is where I grew up and Mom and Dad still live.

  4. Get er done Anna! Yehaw! You can do it! You’ll feel so good when it’s outta your sewing room and into her hot little hands!

  5. Good for you for plowing through. Anyone who can do the “delayed gratification” thing where quilting and chocolate chip cookies are concerned … is a hero of mine.

  6. Hurry and finish, will ya? I very much dislike “HAVE TO” projects and I have a couple that are in my way too! I don’t like to sew under pressure. It’s just not as much fun.

  7. I always find ‘have-to’ projects to be the hardest. But once they are finished it really is a breath of fresh air. (Of course, I’ve never had a project as monumental as a quilt…)

That being said, I’ve been knitting a baby sleepsack since before Christmas. I’m still waiting to take that breath and move on to something new. I love having a reason to buy new yarn (or fabric!).

    XO

  8. You, obviously, were asleep in class when we covered Quilting Rule #97 which clearly states that you should never undertake to make a quilt for anyone if you don’t have a say in picking out the fabrics, BECAUSE if you don’t love it, it will drag you down, and get in the way of the quilts you’re longing to make, and make you feel guilty—and who wants to feel guilty when you’d rather feel quilty…..OK, shoot me now before I spew anymore nonsense. There’s no two ways about it —[see? I told you to shoot me. It’s the only way to shut me up, which is why the sound of gunshots is commonplace around here…]—tee-shirt quilts are BORING! I hope your friend appreciates the sacrifices you are making on her behalf!

  9. Oh my…i have a tshirt quilt haunting me also…send me the other quilt and i’ll quilt it for a pair of those cute knitted socks…(actually, i’m not sure how much time it takes to make those socks it might not be a fair trade for you…)

  10. Ok..this sound worse than quilting a regular quilt..is it so.. ??
I have enogh problem with them..lol…
One done and you soon have the other don too.. good luck!!

  11. That online quilt show was so fun. I wasted too much time on it!
I hope you can get the stuff for others done quickly, and move on to your own fun stuff!

  12. I’ve got a half finished quilt in the bottom of my cupboard. I can see it everytime I open the darned door. It’s been in there for about 4 years and could quite possibly be there for the next 4 too.LOL. I just don’t like it!!
Good for you getting yours done though ;o).
    Hugs,
    Joy :o)
    P.S …. have fun in NJ :o)

  13. Funny to hear that since every time I’ve seen a Tshirt quilt mentioned, my little inner crafty voice says something to the tune of, “Yeah, that *sounds* like a good idea, but I bet it’d be a mess.”

Now I know it would be if *I* made it.

Can’t wait to see the final product. If anyone can make a success of it, it’s you!

  14. I’m in the same boat — I have told myself that I will get at least two of my half-done quilts completed before starting a new one. But I have fabric for two quilts I am dying to make!! Maybe I could start cutting them out — I can make myself a promise that I won’t finish them until I finish the others, right? ;-)

  15. Oh Anna, it’s so hard to work on a project you are just “not that into” but you know you have to finish. You are doing a great job and your stippling looks wonderful, can’t wait to see it completed. And remember in the future it’s OK to just say no……. ya right

  16. Dear Anna,
    New York!!!
Oh I would love to visit New York.
    Hopefully one day I will.
I hope you enjoy your trip.
By the way, I like this Bruce Springsteen-
    t-shirt- quilt.
    Have a great time.
    Janine

  17. Soon you’ll have these t-shirt quilt projects done and off your list. Then you’ll be free to work on something that brings you joy. I tend to procrastinate on “have to” projects, waiting until the last minute to get them done. I’ve never made a t-shirt quilt and probably never will, but I’m sure your end results will be beautiful.

  18. I’ve been wanting to make a t-shirt quilt. Take all of my concert t-shirts that I have saved for years and years and make a quilt out of them. Nothing fancy. Just a keepsake for myself.

  19. Ugh, it’s hard to make yourself finish something that you just aren’t in love with. I’ve found that when trying to knit something when I don’t really love the yarn. Have a good trip!

  20. What a great sense of accomplishment and RELIEF it will be when they’re all done though! I mean think about it. Wahoo! LOL. ;o) TShirt quilts probably aren’t the most interesting thing to make or quilt. But I absolutely love them. Soft, warm, and so many memories. Good Luck! I’m rootin for ya. ;o) ooxx`jodi

  21. Good for you for getting something finished! I have started a new quilt – but it’s allowed because it’s for a baby that was born in February. Eeek! I’d best get moving on it.

  22. You’re so clever! I can’t even begin to imagine what quilting a t-shirt quilt would be like (other than very, very hard work!!!)

Hope you get them done quickly so you can play again!

  23. Wailing and gnashing of teeth. Sounds like a snit. It’s no fun to visit Snitsville. Hope this project is done soon. Stitching on a knit is never fun. For what it’s worth, the project looks cool.

    Take care,
    Cassie

  24. The t-shirt fabric must make you really appreciate good old Moda cotton! I too have way too many projects started and must finish them before starting something new. Have a great weekend.

  25. refer to molly’s comment above re: quilt making. have fun in new york. eat cupcakes for me. i’ll miss you terribly.
    :wipes away a tear

  26. Well, I know the ‘gnashing of teeth’ feeling. Actually I really admire you for finishing these quilts. I usually just never get back to something that does not give me perfect pleasure!!

  27. Now I don’t feel so bad that the one and only quilt I have ever started is still not finished…I’d have to say it’s been about 5+ years. Hope your having fun in NJ…we had a nice trip but I’m glad to be home.

  28. Hi Anna,
my fingers are crossed that you’ll finish this task soon. Too bad when our hobby turns to a chore that has to be done…don’t like it at all but when you are finished you really can reward you with some brand new fabric…a new guilt-free project just for you!
    Hugs, Julia
