The Children are Hot

Hot enough for ya? I know you ladies down under are jealous of our Hotter than Hades temps here in the midwest USA. 105F (40.5C) is probably just a cake walk for you guys, but dang — it’s Hot! In our ~25 years of living here, I don’t remember a temp this high. Close, but not 105. I feel a case of the vapors coming on!

Blogging must go on though, so, I’ve braved the heat and taken a few pics of the Children. The quilt top is finally put together. I stayed in the shade — thus the mottled light and the green grass.

Children at Play

The big stars are 8″ blocks and the little stars measure about 3″ wide.  I debated whether to put a border on the quilt — you don’t see a lot of borders being used with more modern quilts these days.  But, my first love in this fabric collection is that little hopscotch print and I really wanted bigger pieces of it — thus, the border.

Children at Play

This quilt top is baby quilt size — roughly 49″ x 58″.  Don’t be getting any ideas about babies around here though, the only baby around to enjoy this quilt is BabyDoll.

Children at Play

She’s wearing her muslin slip to beat the heat.  (She’s also wearing her muslin slip ’cause I can’t remember where her clothes are — Bad Mommy!)

Children at Play

I’ve decided not to quilt this top now.  The quilting will depend upon the intended recipient, and for now, that is unknown.  So, Children at Play will be the inaugural quilt top in the baby quilt top stash.  I’m sorry, it had to happen.  I love this fabric so much and I just had to play.

Children at Play

(BabyDoll is comparing the size of her hand to the little star — in case you were wondering.  ;-) )
Ok, off to fan myself and get BabyDoll out of the heat!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. It’s beautiful! Is there a pattern or did you design it?

We’re up in the 90’s here and it’s going to be up there until next week. I think I’ll stay inside with a cool drink!

  2. Really cute! And what a good idea to make a baby quilt top to have on hand for when you need it. Might have to copy that one.

  3. Love the quilt! The colours are great. It’s been 58 degrees and damp here for days – you’ve missed some amazing rain. One area of NE England has people trapped in their cars due to flood water, there were 50000 lightning strikes in the UK today….some areas had a 3rd of the rain expected usually in the whole of June in 1 hour today…..welcome to Scottish summer!

  4. I love all of it Anna, except the heat part. It’s going to be 100 here tomorrow. I love a border too and your baby doll is adorable!! Hummm a granddaughter would go nice with your quilt… I think I’ll be waiting a while for one of those too.

  5. Hey Anna, I love the stars quilt and the colors you’ve chosen are wonderful. Lucky little one who receives it! You could send us about 10 – 20 degrees of that heat. We can’t seem to get out of the 60’s here. Now it’s 70 and cloudy, so that’s even more annoying. We’ve been so chilly here that people are thinking you’re stealing from us! LOL

  6. What an adorable quilt. I just love the colors and of course the fabric is simply delightful. I just had a grandson born the 10th of May and I’m just getting the binding done and then I can post a few pictures. On a weather note. . . it’s been in the high 90’s since we’ve been home and the fires in Utah have been too close to home. Stay cool!!!

  7. Now this is a gorgeous quilt. Absolutely stunning! And what a cute baby doll! Was it yours?
It’s hot here too, although not quite as hot as at your end. But we have humidity! It varies from more than 90% in the morning and falls to around 60% in the mid-afternoon, when it is not raining. It is not uncommon to find humidity levels touching a whopping 100% on rainy days.

  8. I’m sorry you’ve landed with some of our weather, but good for you to brave the heat and show that pretty quilt, and the doll. I’ve just finished a vintage book, Michael O’Halloran by Gene Stratton Porter, a highly successful female author in Indiana in the early 1900’s. There is a little girl in the story who has a doll called, “Precious Child”. Your doll made me think of her.

  9. OMG! I LOVE that quilt! Hope you don’t mind me pinning it?

I’m going to be careful what I wish for in the weather department … I don’t think I could stand those kind of temperatures!

  10. Oh dear 40 degrees, no thanks! I hate the heat and we can go as high as 45 here. I think it nearly reached 48 degrees the year we had the bushfires and the humidity was the worst part of it all. I think this is the coldest winter we have had for quite a while so I am hoping that means a cooler summer. Your quilts look beautiful as always and I hope you get some nice cool breezes soon.

  11. When I first saw the quilt, I thought it was large, as there are so many pieced stars. Then you said baby sized, and I was confused, but now that I see the size of the stars, I get it. What a lot of work!! Gorgeous quilt!

  12. I knew it would be fabulous, even in the sweltering heat. I am already yearning for Fall, how about you? :)
    Secret project progressing……….slowly.

  13. Boy what a novel idea – being ahead of the game – I should try that sometime instead of scrambling all the time lol. Seriously cute quilt there sister – love it and Baby doll as well – was that yours

    Hugs – Me

  14. The heat is just awful! I’m gonna have to remember this when I’m whining about the cold and snow this winter. :) But I’m glad you braved the heat to take a picture of this beautiful quilt! Love the stars and the border fabric is great too!

  15. man alive, my children are hot too! i made a point of us playing outside yesterday…from 7am to 930am!! that was IT! i love that hopscotch print too!!

  16. lol, well it’s better you couldn’t find baby doll’s clothes then not being able to find your own! ;p

the quilt is lovely…try to stay in the shade. perfect weather for small embroidery work. ;p

  17. Gale, Ky quilter

Beautiful quilt! And, we are hot in Kentucky, too. I don’t think it has ever been this hot here in all my 51 years and I am so ready for it to be over. Hang in there and stay cool. :)

  18. It is HOT HOT HOT here too. 109 today. I’ve had enough already. Send me some snow and make it snappy.
Love your quilt. OMGGG that is cute. Love baby doll too. That lucky little girl.
    Stay cool over there!!

  19. What a fabulous quilt, I love the colours! I’m sorry it’s so darn hot there, I know just what it feels like and I’m not wishing for it.

  20. Well, Mrs T.A, it’s not hot here, but mild, with frequent showers. I’m glad you’re getting tired of the heat. You know, in case you go anywhere cool later in the year. It would be a nice change.

    Lovely quilt!

  21. LOVE LOVE LOVE these stars!!! Love the shape, the assortment, the size and the colours! You know even though I’m complaining about how cold our winter is this year I wouldn’t swap you for temperatures over 100. Hang in there :)

  22. Squeal-of-delight!!! Love that quilt! Baby doll was nice to model it for you until the Real Baby comes along.

It’s hot here too, but I don’t want snow.

  23. I love it! Did I tell you I am having a pretend baby girl (Katie won’t so I guess I need to) ROTFL

  24. What a lovely way to play with that fabric! Hope it cools down for you soon, but that you find dolly’s clothes beforehand so she doesn’t get cold!!

  25. Hope you continue to survive the heat, just back from the cottage a day early, smoking hot there also, so hot the kids made a list for mom to get points on how to keep them cool….my idea of throwing them in the lake (which would never happen) wasn’t on the list, but freezies and more freezies were, monster puppy is zonked today recovering, longest nap for him ever, and utterly ironic, eldest monster is at an on ice hockey camp today, though it is a holiday monday here…..no end in sight up here. Stay cool…..love the quilt top

  26. love the colours in this quilt. Sounds like all of our summers could do with pouring into a big old mixing bowl, stirring up and sharing out – yours is too hot, ours too cold and wet, so somewhere inbetween would be great for us all!

  27. It’s gonna be another hot one here in Colorado. By Friday, though, they are expecting rain. A monsoon weather pattern they call it. Now that makes me nervous!!!!!

I love the quilt, especially the colors!!!

  28. cute dolly! I love her muslin slip, very southern of her –
The quilt looks cool and crisp like berries and cream – love it!
Also reminds me of a blue raspberry popsickle or a bottle rocket pop – remember those?
    xo
    happy fourth

  29. Beautiful quilt! We have had a record-breaking string of days over 100. I was in Kansas over the weekend and we were talking about weather and some lady actually said to me, “Oh you’re from Colorado. It’s a lot cooler up there.” Yeah. During the winter. ;)

  30. What a lovely quilt Anna! I wish we could have some of your sunshine but maybe not as hot! It’s damp and miserable here – can’t wait for next month to go to Italy! :o) xxx

  31. Oh my Anna, I had a stash of baby things too, quilts and bibs and burp cloths! It’s nice to just pull some out and wrap it up when needed. Long gone though and I am always behind now. Hope you are stay cool!

  32. I have a new appreciation of this quilt as we are making some of these star patterns in my beginning quilt class. I wish I wouldn’t have taken this class right before I decided to move. I’m so behind I’ll never catch up…but I do enjoy it when I’m there. Boxes, boxes, boxes! But it’s just me here so it doesn’t really matter. I guess this is my “time off” after the events of this year. I deserve it. My old house will close on July 20 or the back-up offer will be the 29th so I am making reservations for Seattle first thing in August to get out of this disgusting heat! 70 and rain sounds delightful. Hopefull you won’t see anything in the papers about a crazy woman running around Seattle in her underwear talking about “I’ve died and gone to heaven”. Being around my sister and her crazy friends is always so fun – just what I need, wine, fun, and cool weather. I moved into a condo on a golf course but my numbers are the same if you are down this way, please call and we can catch up. As always, your friend, Robin

  33. Great quilt! I love it. Baby Doll is awfully cute, and you sound just like me with my daughter. She’s wearing X because I haven’t gotten the wash done yet!
