Tidbits for Tuesday

Wow. Here it is August 7th already and I haven’t even posted once in August. Pitiful! There’s lots going on around here, but nothing exciting. I’m super happy to finally see August arrive. Summer is my least favorite season (not a heat fan) but I think August is my favorite month of Summer. There’s just a hint that summer will soon be over. ;-D

So, here are a few tidbits for your August:
We’ve finally had some fairly regular rain showers in the last few weeks. I don’t think we’re officially out of a drought, but there has been enough water to green things back up around here. That makes for very happy flowers. And me!

Daisies

My little garden plot is paying off and I’m loving it. Every night I can go outside and grab a handful of tomatoes for a salad. And the absolute best is driving by on the lawnmower and popping a tomato or two into my mouth. Yuuuuum Yum! Here’s the tomato haul from last night.

Tomatoes

We’re not growing any corn, but one of my very favorite things about August is the corn from the local farm stand. Last week I tried the microwave method of cooking corn in the husks. Oh. My. Gosh. I couldn’t believe it actually works and it’s fantastic. I think I thought it would bomb like the microwave cakes in a mug. The corn was yummy and tender and best of all — no corn silks! If you haven’t heard of this method, you can watch a video here:

While we’re watching videos, I saw this VERY funny video on Pinterest. You don’t need to speak German to get the gist — “So Papa, how do you like the iPad we got you?”:

Another reason I’m excited about August is that it’s vacation month for me. I’ve been busily planning a trip. And that means I haven’t wanted to start any big projects before I go. I am planning a little project though — it involves these towels. ;-D

Towels

And one last video…in honor of the olympics!  A special gymnastics demonstration by Paulette Huntinova.

Have a good week!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. me hateth the heat also. (i’ve been reading de profundis (sp?) by oscar wilde) … did that sound like it’s made me smarter? that ipad video is darling. oh, and i win first commenter prize, and august prize, and and and…
    :waves madly

  2. Not long till the big trip! That sounds good…..I am off to the west coast tomorrow and the forecast isn’t looking too bad! Fingers crossed! It would be great if it were dry but even better if we saw a little sun!

  3. Haven’t been blogging much either – too much Olympics watching. That video was funny – thanks for sharing it!

  4. And yet here, August means that there are glimpses of spring on the way; bulbs coming up, hellebores and rhododendrons flowering. It’s quite lovely – if still very cold!

  5. how fun! I loved the corn video – who knew? I always steam mine, but I’ll have to try this.
I am not a summer fan either! It’s too hot and too long for me.
Give me a fire a quilt and a snowy day and I’m in heaven.
Loved the funny videos. Thanks for the funny wake up.
    xo

  6. We’ve had the most delicious tomatoes here also – beefsteak – yumyumyumyumYUM! With some fresh basil. Stuffed into a piece of fresh Italian bread with some olive oil and salt. OMG! My husband made this for me the first time about 37 years ago – my very favorite sandwich ever since.

    P.S. – I was just a baby when I met him. ;)

Can’t wait to see what you do with the towels!

  7. We’ve been enjoying some cooler nights- yahooooo I’m loving it. Lots of tomatoes growing in my little patch garden, but nothing ripe yet – can’t wait for that. Whoa nelly that’s an awesome way to cook corn – this girl is trying that one out this week. LOVE that Ipad clip – what a hoot – my kids might think we are capable of that since we are so not techy :). Enjoy the week sunshine
    Hugs

  8. LOL August is when summer actually happens here. We had our one day 90 degrees once a year last week. This is summer for us. Enjoy those tomatoes for me. I have gotten!! xox Clarice

  9. Oh I wish I’d seen that video before we had tea… we’ve just had corn lol. My hols are nearly at an end now only one more day and then I’m back to work :-(

  10. WHAT?????? Summer is you least favorite season. THAT is almost blasphemous. Ok. So maybe summer in Montana is a little bit different than summer in Indiana. But I lurve, lurve, lurve summer and her warm days and lovely cool nights.

Ipad video…hahahahaha…even though I love my ipad, too.

Have a lovely vacation, Anna. I hope you are going somewhere with warm, dry days and lovely cool evenings. You will LURVE summer than too.

  11. Such lovely tomatoes – my yard is a disaster this year. Partly my fault (never around) and partly that it actually needs some professional help! So hard to find in Calgary. Hope you have a wonderful holiday. I don’t really know what that is either this year. Hugs.

  12. Great videos! Loved them. I haven’t done corn like that before. Have to try it. So, I’m anxious to see what you’re doing with those towels. They are so pretty!

  13. Glad you finally got some rain! It is just miserable for everything when it’s so dry. The heat – yeah, I could do with a lot less of that, too, but let’s face it – It’s not gonna happen here. Have a great vacation!!!

  14. Pretty, pretty flowers and those tomatoes look delish. I’m starting to get a few ripe ones every other day or so.

Loved the videos. I just bought some fresh ear corn from the local farmer. Can’t wait to try the micro-way.

    Happy August!

  15. I’m with you Anna, summer is too hot. Come down under – I think we’ve maxed out at 10 degrees today and the wind makes it even colder! Just lovely!!

  16. Love the videos… especially love those harvest pictures though. They are going in my “Paint This” folder. *Love* harvest time… as for the heat, I can’t get enough. Summer is so fleeting here. I am already making my “Must Do Before Winter” list. Sigh…

  17. Oh my gosh Anna, your post really packs a punch with so much info and delight. Loved each part of this. Don’t you love going outside and picking a tomato. Each year I make a BLT out of one of the first tomatoes and it is like the best thing I ever ate. I love the color of the flowers, too. My favorite shade of red. And the corn! I am going to do that this weekend. For sure. I can’t wait to make corn like that. And then the last part about the ipad. I’m going to be showing that to everyone. Love love love this post.

  18. LOVED all the videos…and thank you for giving new hope to August…it’s now my favorite summer month…since you know fall is right around the corner!

    Have a wonderful vacation!

  19. Thanks for sharing the ipad video! It even made my stressed out hubby laugh!! I haven’t been hanging out in the bloggy world much lately and just saw your bike basket liner. Love it! And your post about the color run was fun too. My Chicago daughter just did a Dirty Girl run and had a great time. She thinks I should join her next year! Ha!
We are planning a motorcycle trip to Shipshewana this weekend so I’ll be sure and wave when we come through your neck of the woods!!

  20. Ugh. Remember the email discussion we had about liners for our bike baskets? OH NOES!!!! Thursday afternoon, I rode my old 10-speed over to the knitting shop. As I was leaving, I lost my balance in their driveway and fell. I didn’t hurt myself or my bike, but the contents of my basket all flew out. Luckily, I had everything in a market bag with the straps tied shut and everything stayed in the bag, but I am re-thinking the basket liner. After my little spill, I’m thinking some kind of draw-string bag that closes securely and can be fastened into the basket might be a better idea. You could sew pockets into the lining of the bag for your keys, phone, money, etc. Yikes! Now I am off to find fabric that goes with road rash.

  21. We are loving the rain too and it’s amazing how quickly things turned green again. We had seen that corn on the cob video too and were surprised at how well it worked too. I am not a fan of anything in the microwave, so I was not optimistic about it going in and was pleasantly suprised. :)

  22. We bought a bunch of corn while in Idaho and froze it. Actually I gotta say Hunka did it all by himself. I was quite impressed.
So whatcha doing with the towels??? Some embroidery machine action I’m sure If I know you. :)
