MeMum had a birthday this week (Happy Birthday MeMum!!!) and I was ridiculously excited about the birthday present I found for her.   Everytime I saw her this week I said “Tweet Tweet” and told her it was a hint about her birthday present.   So…

Once upon a time, MeMum and BigDaddy went to college at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.  (MyDadLovesMeBestSister and I were born in Logan when they were in school — Yay!)   On main street, in Logan, there’s an adorable little restaurant called the Bluebird and it’s been there since 1914.  (It’s true, we were born after 1914.  ;-)  )

The Bluebird

It’s an super cute little place with an old fashioned ice cream soda bar.

The Bluebird

And lots of candy and sweets.  It’s like an ice cream and candy store, but with a big restaurant in the back.

The Bluebird

Our family all loves to visit the Bluebird.  When I was at market in May, I went to Logan with my aunt and my cousins and we had dinner at the Bluebird.  Look at the cute logo on their dinnerware.

The Bluebird

And while we were eating there, it hit me.  MeMum would have a birthday soon and she loves dishes and she loves the Bluebird.  So, I asked if they would sell some of their dishes (new dishes, not used LOL) and they said yes.  WooHoo!  I babied those plates all the way home on the airplane.  Then when I got home, I spied a little bluebird ribbon that I had in the stash, so I trimmed a few towels to go with the dishes.

The Bluebird

(Sorry for the dark pictures — the plates really aren’t as creamy as these pictures make them appear.) And that’s the story of how MeMum got Bluebird dishes and dishtowels for her birthday.

The Bluebird

The End.

Have a good weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. That is a fabulous story! It sounds like a place that I would love to visit. I bet your mom was so pleased with the birthday gift too!! Also, somehow I figured you were born after 1914 ;)

  2. Happy Birthday to yor mom!
The dishes and towels are gorgeous!
Good to hear I’m not the only one asking to buy dishes or drinking glasses from a restaurant! LOL!
I did so last wednesday, when we went out to have a birthday dinner for our oldest daughter! I asked if I could buy a couple of Coke drinking glasses. A few weeks ago my little princess managed to crush my husbands favorite glass that he had for more than twenty years, so I wanted to find him a new one. They weren’t the same, but almost the same shape as the broken one.
My oldest kids said when we left the restaurant: Next time, please give us the chance to leave the restaurant BEFORE you even think of doing something like that again…!
And the drinking glasses, you may ask? Well, I got the two I asked for, and I got them on the house!!! Hahaha

  3. Wow, I thought dinner was to be the gift, not dishes, lol. That was so thoughtful of you, with a sweet, made with love dishtowel, too! They are sure to be the most memorable gift for years to come ~
    :-}pokey

  4. Happy Birthday to your mom! What a thoughtful gift you bought and made her Anna!!

The Bluebird logo almost looks like blue China called Blue Willow, it has a blue bird on it as well!

  5. First off – Happy Birthday to MeMum. Oh my goodness The Bluebird looks like such a happy place to visit and I bet the food is great – plus candy or ice cream – does it get any better. Oh yes it would – those plates – dang girl how precious. I bet MeMum was thrilled to get them and then of course your little detail on the towels is perfect as well. I bet your the favorite daughter :)

  6. Wonderful ideas…cute place to visit and great ideas for presents. Your mum has a very thoughtful daughter who gives the best presies ever. enjoy your weekend, always, Robin

  7. Happy Birthday to your Mum!! Some years ago we were in a reataurant in New Zealand called Annie’s. They had lovely wineglasses with their logo, and I was able to buy one (I will answer to Annie if I have to!) From there, we travelled home via Singapore, and got the glass home safely. Then, the next year, I went there again (without Malcolm) and bought another glass – and brought it home safely via Los Angeles (and Santa Monica)

  8. I LOVE the bluebird logo! I bet your mum and big daddy were both touched. ;0

I also love the ribbon…how perfect is that.

Have a good weekend Miss Thimble Anna.

  9. Hey happy Weekend,

My guy and I are off to the block. Digging some holes for a tank and delivering the tank to the shed. Super early here and enjoyed reading about the Bluebird…

I have fond memories of a cafe in Darwin, I am sure that since that was before the city was blown away by a cyclone so many years ago it is not there anymore… Frofy coffee and raisin Toast

Thanks for your lovely note on my blog…

  10. Oh my gosh Anna, I love all of your post, the photos, the dishes and the towels ~ perfect gift. I so have a dish problem…. Happy Birthday MeMum!!!

  11. Such a great idea! Years ago I was at the House of Blues in SC and I asked the waitress if they sold their plates — a really great “blue plate special” type plate with a quote about blues music along the rim. “No,” she responded. “In fact we’re getting all new plates next month. You should take those.” What??? Yep, I stole plates from the HoB with permission. They hang on my kitchen wall.

  12. Happy Birthday to your Mum!!! You are so thoughtful, love the dishes and the dishtowels. You are the BEST daughter :D xoxo

  13. you truly are special…& i am certain that your MUM will feel so very special on her b.day!
    kudos & congrats to MeMum!

  14. This is such a touching post because my father’s best memories of his grandmother are of him going with her to the Blue Bird Cafe. My grandmother (Sarah monson Whitehead) grew up in Preston and then later when married moved up to small town Alberta, but whenever they would visit Logan she would always go to this restaurant. Just last April my dad was in Utah and out of sentiment he went to the cafe and had a great time remembering. My dad is 68. I have started a family history blog and so all my questions and stories I have been recording have really helped him to think back and reflect on his life and now on his role as a grandfather. Would you mind if I use some of your pictures and perhaps have my dad be a ‘guest’ blogger on my blog and talk about the special memories that he has of his grandma and the special things that they did together? Please let me know- thanks for the inspiration.

  15. Anna, That is so perfect!!! We love the Bluebird. You won’t believe this but we have one more thing in common. My Mom’s family is from Cache Valley (Smithfield and Hyde Park) so we ate at the Bluebird frequently. I’d love a set of their dishes. Come out and we’ll do road trips (now we just have to go north and south).

  16. What a special gift! I’m sure your mom loved it! And your “tweet tweet” hint to her made me laugh out loud. :)

  17. Happy birthday to memum! And to no.1 son too! Glad she liked the plates and love the towels and ribbons that you got to match!

  18. One of my girls went to Utah State. Loved it. We used to go up and take her to lunch or dinner…every time at the Blue Bird. I miss that place since she and her hub moved to Oklahoma.
