German Potato Salad

Once again, it’s the first Thursday of the month so that means it’s time for another recipe box swap. Randi over at I Have to Say is hosting and this time there is no theme, so I can post any recipe that I want. Thanks for hosting again, Randi!

Since summer is in full swing around here (apparently we just skipped spring altogether) I thought I’d post one of our summer favorites: German Potato Salad. We love to throw some bratwurst on the grill, cook up some corn on the cob and make a batch of German potato salad. I found this recipe many years ago, shortly after we returned from living in Germany. One bite and I’m instantly reminded of evenings spent at a favorite gasthaus dining on fabulous German food. I hope you like it as much as we do!

Have a great weekend — if you’re in the northern hemisphere, I hope you make it out to your grill!

XOXO,

  1. Hi Anna, I am definitely going to try this recipe. OK, I know it is not summer here, but something different is always welcome.

  2. I should really try this — the husband really loves German potato salad and I don’t know if I’ve ever made it! His Pennsylvania Dutch grandmother used to make it for him.

  3. Wow – that sounds different, but good! I have lost my appetite all together today and Potatos sound YUMMY right now in any form! :)

  4. Quite possibly, you have made Herr Becher’s week. I won’t have a chance to make this until Sunday, but what a Sunday dinner it will be. I always want loads of bacon the GPS… I might have to go overboard. Also, more research was done on the bakery-front… you will definately be taste-testing the chocolate bars (like cake, but flatter) with peanut-butter and fudge frosting. Come hungry… in stretchy pants. ooxxoo Cami

  5. I might give this interesting recipe a go…I have to say, I don’t really like the sound of most German food. Do you have any other recipes you can recommend?

  6. Oh, you’re making me hungry! I love potato salad made that way. That must be a recipe from southern Germany ’cause up here in the north it’s usually done with a mayonnaise dressing, dill pickles and hard-boiled eggs. I sometimes throw in a chopped apple as well.

We’re having our neighbours over for a barbeque tonight – the weather has been just stupendous. Enjoy your weekend!

liebschen! thanks for the german potato salad recipe. i’ll make some this weekend. when do you toss in the onions? do you cook them first in the drippings, or toss them in raw?
hey, we’re ALWAYS grillin’ around here!
:sits outside and tans her legs for a few minutes this afternoon
(okay FINE, so my legs are so white, they are BLUE, but one can at least pretend now and again!)

  8. I haven’t had German potato salad in years! Growing up in the heart of pennsylvania dutch country that was something I had from time to time but haven’t thought about in years! I’ll have to make it. I don’t know what my family would think of it. I’ve never made it before for them. Your receipe looks delicious. I’m working on getting that banana split cupcake recipe and I’ll post it when I get it.

  9. Your potato salad looks yummy – and for once I have all the ingredients in the house!!

I had to get the barbeque out tonight to cook our sausages for dinner as the grill on my oven has died!

They did taste lovely though :)

  12. We love, love, love German Potato Salad. I’m so ready to get back the the states – and my stuff – and make some more!

  13. Not quite potato salad weather here in NZ but my hubby was pretty keen on the recipe. He lived in Germany for several years and loves Bratwurst

  14. Hi Anna, I have had German Potato Salad but have never made it. Now that I have your recipe I will make it this week. My friends mother use to make it when we were growing up and I loved it. Actually, I love almost every potato dish I have ever tried since potatoes are one of my favorite things.

  15. Mmmm, you know it’s summer when people break out their potato salad recipes! I’ve never put bacon in before but I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why not!
