Blueberries

Awwww. Thanks so much for all of your wonderful comments about my little baseball-loving boy. It was fun to see what so many of you have in common with us. Isn’t it sad when our babies grow up? Oh well, no crying over grown babies…moving right along!

I’ve been in blueberry mode this last month, so I thought I’d tell you about three very successful blueberry treats here in ThimbleannaLand. First up was blueberry jam, which looks remarkably like the raspberry-cherry jam MeMum and I made a few weeks ago. We used the same recipe, with three cups of crushed blueberries in the place of the raspberries and cherries and 3/4 cup of water in the place of the cherry juice.

Next were blueberry scones.  Now, I’m not a scone expert like so many of you in Europe and Australia, but I’ve had bad scones (to my tastebuds – lead rocks) and excellent scones (light and fluffy).  This month I found a fantastic new recipe for blueberry scones – they’re light and flaky and ooooh-so-good!

Blueberry Yummies

I found the recipe in a Cooks Illustrated magazine — it’s available on-line here.  The secret is in the way they mix the ingredients.  They grate frozen butter and knead lightly.  Then, after chilling the dough, they roll the blueberries up in it like you would roll cinnamon rolls.  I thought that was pretty cool — no more squished blueberries.  If you like blueberries and scones, you should give this recipe a try.

Blueberry Yummies

Speaking of liking blueberries, I wouldn’t touch them until a few years ago.  Then I read somewhere that they’re a superfood and I decided I should try to like them.  Now, oddly,  I can’t get enough of them.  Anyway, the third recipe I tried was for a blueberry almond cookie from The English Kitchen (love her blog!).

Blueberry Yummies

I’m a BIG (as in cookie size) cookie baker and I resisted the urge to make these cookies twice as big as recommended in the recipe.  It turned out to be a good decision, as these little gems are pretty rich.  Marie says they might possibly be the best cookie you’ve ever had, and it’s definitely in my top five.  How can you turn down drizzled white chocolate???

Blueberry Yummies

Yum..Yum!  Don’t say I never gave you anything.  The calories alone in this post, have to be worth something!  Now I’m off to jump-start the weekend.  My littlest angel, TheSecondChild is coming home for a few days with a new little friend — I must get cleaning!

Happy Labor Day in the US and Father’s Day in Australia!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. I love blueberries too! They are a favorite in our home. Your post has made me want blueberry pancakes for dinner tonight… Thanks for the recipes!

    Jennifer :)

  2. yummm it all looks good but i think I will have to try the cookies! If they are in your top 5 they must be awesome! I just LOVE Cooks Illustrated!

  3. The Bean’s blueberry patch produced more berries this year than ever before and they were delicious! But I wanted some for the freezer so I could have a handful in my oatmeal and feel virtuous and be well nourished through the winter [You can’t see it from there but I have a halo hovering over my head]….SO…..We went blueberry picking to a local farm….To say we got carried away is to put it mildly. It was so much fun we just kept on picking, and picking, and picking. And now I have to fudge and squeeze to fit staples like ice cream and meat into the freezer! That scone recipe looks delicious [Cooks.com recipes are always delicious!] I’ll be making them very soon….Have a great Labor Day w.e.

  4. HMMM…there’s bakery nearby that does blueberry chocolate chip cookie bars — which doesn’t sound all that great to me, but they rock!!

  5. I saw the cookie recipe over on the english kitchen and thought it looked sooo good…now I may have to go ahead and makes them…I can’t resist them twice…

  6. Thank you for the review about the scone recipe. I have tried several recipes for them and they don’t come out with the right texture/density. I can’t wait to try that one!

  7. I definitely agree with you about scones–so I am looking forward to trying your recipe! And the cookies look wonderful, too. Keep eating those blueberries!

  8. Oh yum!!! I will have to give your recipe for the scones a try; mine never turn out the way they should, so I have actually given up making them. And just looking at those cookies makes my mouth water!

  9. Anna…what are you doing with me? I want to crawl into my display to get some scones…they look so delicious! Thanks for pointing out the source of the recipe…I still have some blueberries in the freezer (but those with the yellow, not the blue flesh; I’ve learnt recently that there are different species…but I think both are great) so I will definitely try it!
And those cookies…boy, I think I’ve already gained 2 pounds just by looking at these!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend with your family & Happy Labor Day,
    Julia

  10. I love blueberries but the last lot were so sour, I better wait until they are well and truly in season. My favourite is fresh with vanilla yoghurt.

  11. good morning.
love all of the blueberry schtuff!!
but i’m a girl who has loved blueberries her whole life.
my first job was picking blueberries at a farm in bellevue, washington called Overlake. we hung a coffee can from our neck with twine and then rolled those gorgeous berries right into the can. we got paid $2 a flat! but i was 12, and a 12 year old doesn’t need much. anyway, i would bring blueberries home and pull out my mother’s Women’s Day Encycolpedia of Cooking books and make everything they had in that book that had blueberries in it. I still make those same muffins! I made blueberry syrup for pancakes, blueberry sauce, blueberry pie, scones….
that’s it! i’m heading to farmer’s market for some blueberries!!!
i would like your next post to be on huckleberries. i’ll let you know your schedule after you’ve finished that one.
happy labor day! i’m glad you’re not in labor this weekend.
    :waves madly

  12. These both look yummy! Its cooler here this AM and I’m thinking of cooking and baking again. But most of all I’m planning on sewing this weekend. Have a great time with your company.

  13. Those scones look and sound scrumptious, Anna. I didn’t think I like blueberries either unti a few years ago when I finally tasted a blueberry muffin. Yum!

  14. Anna: Thanks for the heads up on the English Kitchen blog. There goes the diet. I’m going to try to find dried blueberries and make them for the blogger get-together.

  15. We’re having a bit of child-growing-up sadness in this household too. Lovely baseball boy story, though.

And the goodies look pretty good as well.

  16. The easiest scone recipe ever….
    3 cups Self raising flour
    1 cup cream
    1 cup lemonade.
Mix together with knife….(don’t over mix and squash all the lemonade bubbles – they make the scones light)

  17. Oh Anna, those cookies and scones look so delicious! I am going to give your recipes a try, thanks! Great baseball story I know the feeling, I hug my children tight as often as I can. Your photos look good enough to eat….

  18. The scones look great. I love your quilts – especially The Friendship Quilt. I have a bag full of 3″ blocks from a swap (over several years) at our quilt retreat up in Shipshewana, and I think setting those will be my next project. I found you while looking for more Indiana bloggers on the quilt bloggers site. Love your blog.

  19. Ooh what delicious looking cookies. I made some blueberry muffins recently but they were nowhere near as lovely as I hoped. I may have to give the cookies a go instead.

I’m hungry now, after seeing your yummy baking!

    xxx

  20. Sorry Anna, but I dribbled all over your blog. It’s your own fault for publishing such ‘mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm’ photos :p I have never, ever before heard of grating frozen butter into anything! I will have to give that a try. x

  21. Thanks, I’ve added this cookie recipe to my ever-increasing “gonna try it one day” file. Munching on a piece of pineapple upside down cake right now. :) And I wonder why I can’t lose weight! Go figure.

  22. Blasberry doesn’t have the same ring as Chazberry, does it? Oh, I wish I could come have toast at your house! Sounds divine. I hope you had a lovely time with TheSecondChild. Take care.

  23. I’ve peeped at this a couple of times now – it’s made me ravenous every time. This cookies look perfect! Thanks for your lovely thoughts on little one’s first day. She’s having great fun so far!

  24. Akk I am soo behind on blog visiting (thank you for not posting every day ; -)
So do I dare say anything about cooks tip on the butter?? I will say this and you are free to ignore me. I like my butter in things like scones and biscuits to be the size of larges peas. I find that helps create more of a flaky scone. So the problem with grating the butter is it is too small (well in my opinion). So that is my unsolicited opinion. I am sure you are asking who care xoxox Clarice-who can just not be quite about cooking
PS. Love how they did the blueberries!!!

  25. Yummy, Just looking at those scones and cookies could put on a few pounds. LOL Love Love blueberries so I may have to bookmark your recipes for later and try them out. Thanks for sharing, your photo’s are fantastic.

  26. The Blueberry scones look so yummy. I think when you have time, you should post the recipe, Cooks tries to make you sign up for their “free trial” website for 14 days :(. I am in the mood to bake something new.

  27. Oh I love blueberries, they are so darn cheap (for here) at the moment! I have been eating buckets of them…
I love a good scone too, usually split them and whack raspberry jam and king island cream (its very very deadly, so creamy its YELLOW – more like marscapone thickness).. may as well whack the fat straight to the thighs.. I make lemonade scones, they are the easiest fluffiest scones you’ll ever eat and almost no fail!
